Im Feelin Crabby!
Wye Sun 7/30

Made the 100 mile journey from northern VA this morning. Got to landing about 5:45am. (Bennett point) Tossed the jon boat in and ran the 47lb thrust motorguide wide open ( speed #5 !) about 1/2 mile down river toward the mouth. dropped 16 traps in a zigzag line alternating 6-8' and 10-12'.about third trap on first run caught a black 8 3/4" monster that was missing a claw. very heavy , felt like I was pulling an anchor instead of a trap! Next 4 or 5 runs nothing. moved all traps to 10'. caught 3 more about 5 1/2-6". Moved about 1/4 mile back up river along same shore. By this time the tide was moving a little better. caught 2 more keepers and several smallies in about 6 runs. Was about 11:30 , first battery dead, sun was kickin' hot! and I was not going to come home with 6 crabs!
Was using turkey neck for the first time, and I was blaming that for the lousy catch(because everyone knows chicken has more flavor than turkey. Not as dry either) so I rebaited traps with chicken legs and thighs that I brought as backup. Headed back closer to landing and dropped traps in 10' along adjacent shore, in front of a line of docks. Decided to do only 3 runs because I was on last battery.first 2 runs notta. 3rd run hit the jackpot! a 7-8 incher in about every other trap. Made another run and same thing. made another run and pulled about 15 5" throwbacks.
Finished about 1:30 with about 2 dozen. majority over 7" 5 of them over 8". Other than sunburn and jellyfish stings not a bad day. ----- Brad

Brad, way to go! I saw you when we headed in, and honestly thought you were nuts and wasting your time there! That is the first I heard of anyone doing anything that close to the landing with traps this year! I know some comms ran lines there earlier this week with a gazillion feet of trotline and manged a dozen.

Ive actually done pretty well at that dock next to the landing. I cant cover alot of ground so I have to make the most of the water I can access. its a slow crawl trying to reach the spot I want to set up, and more than once Ive watched someone else zip to the spot right ahead of me and drop traps and zip off to other areas before I can even get there.
Im actually getting ready to start a boatbuilding project to build a larger crabbing/fishing vessel.
Next time you see me on the water, say hey ..... Im not really nuts, I just seem that way!

Not nuts at all brad, I use to zip around NJ and NY in raft with a trolling motor, but that kept getting me in trouble with the law, another story
Anyway good job, nice report.
