Trot line in the Hudson River

Hello, I haven't crabbed in years and didn't get out this year as I thought I would.
So I'm planning fo next year.
I was  wondering if a trot line is legal in NY?
Is a trot line feasable to use in the Hudson with a current?
How does the members here catch in the Hudson?
I striper fish out of Kingston..
Yea I'm bored !

Hey Brian, You missed a good year on the Hudson. They were like the candy (good and plenty) . We crab out of germantown in the bays where the current isn't as strong but you still need 4' of chain on both ends of the trotline to keep it down. I can't find any regs on trotline use in the Hudson so i guess it's legal I use the box traps with buoys usually in 6 to 12' of water . We also go out of catskill and germantown for the shad and striper's. I agree it's gonna be a long winter

I'm glad you had a great year!!
What do you use for bait?
I've been looking through these posts to see how to make a trot line.
I'm not clear about how to attach the bait to the line.
I saw Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs on TV go out with a Maryland?? waterman.
They picked up the trot line and laid it on a boat trailer roller and used a dip
net to get the crabs. Is that how you do it?
Also it seems like it's 50 per person a day?
Blowin a gale tonight, gona be worst tomorrow.

Do some searching on the site...........there is a special section on trot lines........search for "Snood" (the way to attach bait)  there is tons of info here.

If you still have trouble finding what you want re-post and I will send you stuff

Hey Brian. In the crab traps we found that fish works the best (sunfish, bluegill etc). In the trotline we use chicken necks attached by a slipknot. Masspi is right just do a search for trotline or snoods and you'll be reading all day
