Howdy Folks.. I'm a new user here from out on the west coast. When researching baits on the net all I keep hearing about is Chicken necks. Well after scouring about every store and butcher shop including the asian and mexican markets, no one seems to have any. So where does everyone come up with chicken necks?

Here in NJ, we get them from butcher shops that specialize in chickens exclusively. Ask your local butcher, he should be able to help you. Ask him where the market gets their chickens from. Or you can do a Google or Yahoo for whole sale chicken in your area. Good luck...

legs are the best.. we tried necks and didn't have much success like we did with the legs.. you can pick up 24 pack of meaty legs at the supermarket for a decent price (i forget how much).. make sure the legs are tied on good. lots of meat and 1 leg will go a long way..

I think any thing other then necks or pogeys, make a mess when they break down, but all I use are pots, not trot lines or topless.
Bill on here said he is catching mullet and the crabs are tearing it up.

I had one of the best days I ever had in Barnegat Bay in 1989. We were using a pontoon bat and the only thing used was 3 bunker and a bunch of chicken legs that I marinated in a 5 gallon bucket with water, oil oil and about 4 cut up bluefish racks caught the previous day. ( the soak in this was just for the time it took to get there and then right up until the bait was used). Wow That was in SEPT. we ended up with over three bushels and we ended up only taking home 1 bushel of the biggest.

Well after scouring about every store and butcher shop including the asian and mexican markets, no one seems to have any. So where does everyone come up with chicken necks? Chicken wholesalers sell trays of necks. I bought 40 lbs for $16 in South Jersey. IT was 400 necks. Before that I would ask the supermarket butcher to mark down packages of chicken that were at there sale date. Often they would mark it down 50%. Get to know them and call in advance. For now though I think the 40 lb necks is the way I will go thanks to a member here pointing me to the location in Voorhees in S NJ. I repackaged and froze them into 20/40/80 neck packages for later use.

Re chicken necks... Your bait shops should have them. I have used chicken wings and had good results with them. Someone suggested "roughing" them up before using to allow more of the scent to disperse. Anyway good luck!

2009 and necks should still work. The place in Voorhees NJ sells commercial boxes of hamburgers hotdogs etc. So perhaps a place in DE that does the same would have the trays of necks. dial 1-800-2chacha from a cell phone that has text messaging and leave a clear, precise message such as "Where can I purchase chinken necks WHOLESALE near zip code XXXXXX." They will research it and reply free of charge. You might also get an advertisement pushed at you in the email based on your zip and question. That is how they get paid. If anyone likes this idea for their business feel free to respond here for more info. Everyone should call and ask a question that interests them or use it for free 411. If you are young or old and hip you can just text message them at 242242

Bedmur, the point wasn't whether necks still work as bait....the point was that the person that asked the question hasn't been on this forum since 2007.

You are correct, sorry. My comment was a poor attempt at humor. My kids constantly remind me that I have none and now BLueCrab has sided with them. I guess I get the message.

Nah - good one, I got it! I suppose I should move the topic to a more appropriate board, but it's survived unnoticed here for 2 years, so I'll just leave the sleeping dog lie. The topic starter won't care, he hasn't been back since.

My kids like chicken so i buy the chicken leg quarters. I cut the back section off the thigh and keep it in a tupperware bowl in the freezer untill i go crabbing. I have used all i saved over the winter already as bait so i start buying backs from the butcher. I have always found that fresher is better. I dont let mine soak with fish or anything. I only keep it for about 45 minutes and replace it. Thats the best luck i have had with chicken.

I was out yesterday and a guy was using chick. thighs. He was pulling more than the rest of us who were using the necks. Sooo it's off to the store for thighs. I've also used fish parts and had good results. Good luck on your outing!!

I prefer to use necks, but if I can't get them, any part of a chicken or bunker will do. Sometimes you can find legs or quarters on sale so cheap, it makes sense to pick them up. Backs, of course, work well as well too!

Ron, you don't ever need to run out of necks. Plenty of places around Dover to get them. I go through 2 cases a year. 1 for MD and 1 for PPlant
