All,

I stumbled upon this discussion forum by accident. There must be a forum for every interest in life. Found it as a link from a site posting the regulations. I am trying to get back in the swing of it. I have a teenage son, and I want to pass to him that which was passed to me by my grandfather, and my father. Truly, communing with the water at day break is an aspect of life one won't find in a video game or hanging out with your friends. Pulling up that first crab, with the only sound of water lapping along the side of your boat, hopefully, will win hands down.

Anyway, glad to be on board. I have been crabbing on and off before I can remember. My grandparents lived on the Magothy, and I piloted my own wooded row boat (using a 3 hp Sea King!) even before I was allowed to cross a street on my own. Things were much different then. As long as you knew how to swim, avoided the sea weed, and wore your life preserver, the river was a safe and fun place to be. Everyone you met working the water was not only friendly, but a guardian of sorts. The 60's was a golden age for kids, and the Magothy and its tributaries was my kingdom.  As a teenager, I showed my first girlfriend around my stomping grounds, and it was on these waters that I told her that I loved her. Being on that river must have impressed her because we have been married for 25 years now.

As a young man, my grandfather taught me how to crab and showed me all his favorite spots. Later my Dad and I crabbed every single week from late May through September for many, many years, until he succumbed to cancer. My last memory of my father was in a dream, just after he died. We were heading up the Magother on his boat, toward our favorite spot off Gibson Island. But, this just wasn't any trip, he wanted to show me heaven. His heaven was crabbing on the Magothy, long, long before it was settled and developed. I looked around at its pristine state just as created by God. Wow, what a site and what an outing. The crabs almost jumped into the boat, and every crab we caught that day was a Jimmy!

I look forward to taking part in this forum, and with all your help hope to find something that I may have lost along the way.

Welcome Raven, I too have a teenage son & find our best time to bond is when we are crabbing. It also helps when we have a full bushel, gives us something to share as an acomplishment.

welcome r. great heart warming post. i too have a teenage son who`s my main crabbing partner. lots of good memories are bing made on our 16ft. 1976 tri hull. it`s funny, when we arn`t catching any we start to argue, but as soon as we haul one in ,every thing goes back to normal,e.g. laughing and carring on. the younger 15 yr. old daughter is not much into it. we all went out since they were 10 or 11.anyway thanks again for sharing your memories and i`m sorry for the loss of your dad. i`ll bet you miss him much.  lgc

Hello everyone! I've finally decided to register. I like reading the different posts on this site, so I can learn how to crab. I was out yesterday at Beaver Dam boat rentals and only caught 3 crabs.  My freinds told me it was because there is a full moon tonight and crabs are molting.
When would be a good time to try again? I was using bunker with traps and a couple of handlines.

Welcome aboard slimjms

Its hard to say how much effect a full moon makes this late in the season.  I personally have not seen many peelers this week.  You might want to post that question in the "How to" section of the forum.

Glad you decided to register. Grin
