Does anyone know good spots at Jones Beach on LI to crab? I use to drive to captree but Gas is killing me. Also, and reports from the North Shore of Nassau county, around Tappan Beach?

July 30, 2009. [Bumping it up the forum list]
Blue claw crabs are a rarity here.

There are always TONS of adult green crabs and some freckled lady crabs. There haven't been as many spider crabs now as in past years. Those that I have seen this year are on the small side for spider crabs.

I saw 3 or 4 over last summer (208), but that's it. None so far at all this year.

The bottom by the main piers is mostly sand with a bit of rubble, the current is strong, and the little marina on the side is shallow (like knee deep by the marina dock at dead low tide) with sea lettuce seaweed, no eel grass, but LOTS of green crab, spearing, peanut bunker (soon) and snappers later in August. Umbrella traps used to catch spearing will sometimes bring up baby half-dollar sized flounder.

Incidentally, the very first lionfish caught in NY waters was caught years ago by a marine researcher snorkeling in the marina area. It was just a baby, but it shocked the marine research field to their boots. They are sometimes caught in seine nets out east near other inlets now, late in Summer. They are ambush predators and are rarely caught on hook and line. They hang out in places where the current isn't strong and wait for food to show up. They are edible and supposed to be tasty, just nip the fins off with wire cutters to be safe.
