Hi,
I'm from Massachusetts, but I plan on driving up to Maine to do some crabbing, and I was wondering if I need a permit or license if I just use a string and chicken, or possibly a vegetable strainer and chicken. I know there are crabs there, I just was wondering if I need some permit to crab there (all I know is that we are not supposed to take green crabs)

There probably won't be any blue crab, which this site focuses on. But it wouldn't be hard to do a search of the Maine dot gov website to see what they say about crabs.

I've searched their site, and they do not say much about crabbing (except for invasive crabs)

Some reading material for you

http://www.bluecrab.info/forum/index.php?topic=24801.0

also,

A lobster/crab permit is required of all persons to fish for lobster and edible crabs in coastal waters. To sell lobster and crabs, a commercial lobster/crab permit is required. However, no permit is required to take edible crabs for use by immediate family, provided that the number of crabs does not exceed fifty(50) in one day and that no pots or traps are used.
