All this rain. Then the pattern changes and it T storms ..More water running off! Its June 16 and I wonder how the WYE River is ..too soon I bet. Too much fresh water down the bay. I ask for Eastern Shore reports because thats where the  big ones are Chester River, Eastern Bay, the WYE. Now I have been to the WYE in early July two years ago and it was slim pickins also so it may be later yet this year. Then again with all the fresh water in the bay the crabs have to be somewhere. Maybe in Va. or the lower Potomac River or Honga island area cross the bay.. Time will tell.

CrySAD is the only way to describe the situation at the Wye. I've crabed there for about 15 years, and this is the worst that I've ever seen. I started this year on May-19...(2 crabs) then June-3.... (3 crabs)  then June 15....(8 crabs) and yes for all you that think mid May is to early for the Wye, I will say that it is never a landslide at that time of the season, but usually I can count  on at least 1/2 bushel or more as long as you stay on the move and work at it. Will see what late June can do! hope for lot's of sun and less rain.

Well there coming in good to hear at least that much. Hopefully things will pick up. but we will be catching crabs..some of us its going to be a lot of work smaller catches. That may mean less congestion on the water..What am I saying !Less congestion!  I long to see the mile long line of parked trucks and trailers on the left side going to WYE Landing it means good crabbin! Maybe by late July!

Darrell:
I was heading to my early season crabbing hole yesterday, when I decided at the last moment to check out the Wye, just for the heck of it.  Got there at 5:45 am and only two other trailers in the parking area.
Hit the water at 6:10 with my ole trot line.  I was out to the right in my favorie spot across from that wide area and that boat house.  Anyway..6 passes and nothing, then on the 7th got me a nice one, and again on the 8th pass another biggy.  After that I moved into the shallows and then right in the middle of the channel and nothing!

It's better then getting "skunked" but a about another 7-8 would have been nice.

I left at 9:30 and headed to my early season spot and did very well.  See "Second Time Out".

Take care,

Well, hit the Wye this morning. Pots in at 5:15 out at 8:45, 3 [dang] crabs. 30 pots. The salinity is really down, and saw not one jelly. My bait was not even touched at all. Oh well, try again in two weeks.

Southswell:
Roger that.  This recent hard rain didn't help matters any, huh?  Were you out near the mouths of the river or up inside?  I crabbed there last week for a few hours ( see earlier entry ) and did not fair well either.

Maybe this sudden warm air and no rain will get them a coming!

 Howard,
I was up inside. I think the warm weather will help, as long as it stays warm and the rain stays away. Last year was the best I did in a few years because of the high salinity. I think September and October will be the months this year. Last year they were as well, but this year could be really good. Should have some large jimmies then, especially if they continue to stay out of the creeks and rivers for a while.
Take care!

I am taking my three children crabbibg this weekend.  We usually go to the Wye River and in the past have had much success.  The posted reports however are making me wonder if we should go elsewhere.  Any current reports would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for the help fellow crabbers.

Coach D,
How are the wife and kids? "T" told me you had a pretty successful season last year.  I hope the move went well for everyone. Parrish had a great year and RL made it to districts.  I helped out on the bench this year.  We should be pretty good again next season.  I have not been out yet this year.  I had back surgery at the end of April and just went back to work last week.  Big Thacker and Coach K are planning to go out Thursday with me.  Let me know when you plan to go.  Take care and let me know how you make out.

Fox,

Were leaving at midnight from Pittsburg so we can be on the water bright and early Thursday morning.  We plan on renting a boat at Wye landing.  This will be Julia's first crabbing experience.  Let's conect - I will give you a call before we leave.

Coach D,

Schneider boat rentals reports Crabs have dropped off at the WYE.  I was there Sunday.  Took 3 hours to catch 9 crabs.  Most everyone at the ramp reported the same.  Not sure why or when it will change, but not looking good right now.

Coach D,
Looks like the weather is not going to be in our corner on Thursday.  I may try to get out on Saturday.   The reports don't look good though.  I put the boat in at Wye Landing.

If you guys are driving from Pittsburg, don't waste your time at the Wye. there are many other public ramps that are very close the Wye that may produce much better results. The trip from that part of PA to the Wye (in my humble opinion) can be a major waste of time. You could always finish your day there with a nice boat ride. Remember that permits are required and tickets will be written for permitless vehichles or trailers. Check out the locations of ramps in the area  http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/state2.html.

Good Luck Grin

Well fellow Wye crabbers, after nailing two dozen nice jimmies up at Crab Alley (6-9 AM) this past Monday, I coiled up the ole trot line and decided that after two weeks the Wye should be getting a lot better.  Well I hit the Wye around 11:00 AM and tried two spots not too far from where I normally go and man I did not even see a crab.  Angry Very discouraging when I can go north or south of the Wye and fair well.  It must be the large amounts of fresh water because it is definitely warmed up and I would believe there is ample food in the river for them to get at....Huh

I did talk to a couple of guys who had came in from close to the mouth of the river and they said they did ok with their traps but by around 10:30, the action really tapered off.   Like we have all been talking about...this nasty winter and above normal rainfall and cooler temps has put the big blue monsters about 2-3 weeks behind schedule. Shocked

I think the wait will be well worth it.... Tongue  I have been out 3 times in the last 4 weeks (south of the Wye and just north of the Wye) and each time the crabs were larger, heavier and more plentiful then the last. Grin

So my prediction is that the critters who start to migrate into the Wye are going to be on average 7 - 8", perhaps bigger, YE-YE YE-YE! So be ready, and let's make sure that we get the word out so we can  be the first to nail em!   Grin

Take care and be safe out there...

D,
How did the trip go?  Did Julia catch any monsters??  Let me know the next time you plan a trip and I'll try to get Tim to go.  I may still try to go this weekend, just depends on how I feel after my trip to Philly today.

I ran trot lines way up the Wye and was one short of getting skunked! I imagine I was to far up, we don't normally see then run well up here till much later but thot I'd give it a shot.
