Hello All, This is my first post ever on a dis board. I recently moved to Brooklyn, and I would love to try my hand at crabbing. Any areas or spots you'd recommend a newbie start at? Also, what kind of bait is best to begin with? When does the season start? Are there any waters you never want to eat from? Thanks in advance! Side note: I have a car and I am willing to travel within about an hour of Brooklyn. Also, I do not have a boat so it will have to be off of a pier/dock.

Born and raised in Brooklyn...Years ago crabbed under the over passes on the Belt pkwy...now?? Crabbed over by Nelly Bly ....now?? Crabbed Cross bay blvd (not really Bk) on the 1st bridge..Now ?? Crabbed Garrison Beach...now?? Crabbed Plumb beach..now?? Your best bet would probably be L.I. or N.J..........Unless there are still some hidden spots left Jerry

Mutzy,
Are these sites no longer there ? Unproductive ? Too crowded ? Why don't you use them anymore ?

I used those spots many, many years ago,are there still crabs there I really don't know.I live in Staten Is. now and I crab New Jersey and Maryland. The areas that I mentioned I crabbed in the 60's and in my opinion was much cleaner then or I was so young I really didn't care......I guess I'm just a little bit older now and I guess a little bit smarter Mutz

not looking to argue here but i have been catching crab dinners in brooklyn for years. there are plenty of small spots left you just have to put your time in and look for them . a flashlight and a long handle net in sheepshead bay for starters,

crabbing was decent all weekend, some on the poles , some on the docks, some in the overnighters some on the beach . managed 12-18 each day . fresh fliuke and bluefish racks in the pots work just fine. had some friends over yesterday and ate them all. will be back at stockpiling them tomorrow,

had them good last night. almost filled a 5 gal compound bucket. gonna be some good eats. all nice size too . quite a few doublers. , the girls go back . and a few leatherbacks that now have their own little room under the boat. the will be on the short stay plan at the motel and will be evicted for thursday nights dinner also.
they are out there guys.. catch em up.
home depot and lowes each sell a rechargeable 1 million candle power light for about $12 and is well worth it . the batteries last 45 mins or so and i use 4 lights a night.

been away for a while. away from the saltwater too. in the bay you need a long handle net and a searchlight. 12 foot handle and better... just looked at your google shot. EMMONS AVE ... on the north side and the entire bulkhead on the south . once you get there you will know what to do.

There's a new pier in Williamsburg I'd love to try. Can anybody vouch for the East River crab being edible?
It's been relatively clean for years. But, are they safe to eat?

got out last night for the first time since mid july, between all the rain and coaching baseball and a vacation well all that is finally done with. back in action last night 2 hours kept a dozen 6" and better jimmies. time to catch em up ... had 2 doublers that were "coupled up" and just flipped them both back without separating them . let them breed...
