Good to here...  This stormy weather has turned them off over here.. Plus we had a big shed last night.. Little jimmies been sheding all week.  Look for the sallies to start up now with the full moon this weekend.  Guess I won't see any hard crabs for a week or so.

I have been catching alot of females this year in the lynnhaven inlet, in the past I would always throw the females back.  I have done more research on this site and it says that a female will only mate once in its life so.....if I catch a female that has already dumped her eggs I shouldnt feel bad about keeping it?Huh??  I heard that if the sponge is orange it has already layed its eggs but if its black or dark they are about to drop.....What does everyone think?

THROW ALL FEMALES BACK!!WELL ALMOST ALL IM NOT THROWING AN 8" FEMALE BACK SHES DONE HER JOB,
BEYOND THAT ILL HEDGE ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION JUST INCASE SHE WANTS TO RELEASE ANOTHER MILLION OR SO FERTILIZED EGGS SHE MAY ONLY MATE ONCE, SHE CAN STORE SPERM FOR THE NEXT BATCH
YOU WILL CATCH MOSTLY FEMALES IN THE INLET,  AND AT RUDEE AS WELL, LOOK TO THE CREEKS AND BRACKISH FOR THE JIMMYS

Welcome to the forum Sea Donkey..  Sooks have been documented to have as many as 8 spawns (sponges) from a single mating.  Click on the little crab at the bottom of the page for more infomation about the crabs life cylce, breeding, spawning, etc.

thanks for the info!  since I live on the lynnhaven inlet, where would you recommend me "chicken neckin" in my area where I can get Jimmies?  Also I asked my friend who is a VBPD marine patrolman where I was allowed to drop a crab pot, he told me in the inlet outside of a channel.  so I found a good spot and dropped it around 5 in the evening, I went to check it the next day at 5 in the AM and it was gone.....the bouy was secure, but gone within 12 hours.....any idead

I just spent today traveling to Yorktown waterfront & Buckroe Beach and saw few crabbing and no one catching any crabs(11am-3pm)......where can one go to crab(chicken/cow lip lines & net or drop traps)...that is close to Richmond...safe, clean, easy access, etc.....I thought I knew some places but seems that I do not....thank you in advance!

Hello All,
Where is a good place to crab in Virginia. I'm from out of town and looking a location to crab and find accomodations. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
I was thinking of crabbing on shore, what is your take on this idea?
Do I need to purchase a license?
Thanks for the time and hope to hear some feedback.
Regards,
JV

Theres 21 miles of bridge on chesapeake bay bridge tunnel to crab from. Just pretend to be broke down... If you want a more crowded spot you could try the pier there. Just make sure you have plenty of line. laugh laugh laugh
