I crab down ocean city quite a bit. (recreationally)  I would like to take the kids looking for softcrabs but wondered if there is a better time of month or season to look.  I rememer catching them as a kid in the chesapeake with nets.  I can only assume its not as easy these days.

If crabs are shedding on the full moon, how come all or most crabs are not softies after a full moon.  Up in NJ you only have a handfull each year with the short season.

lots of debate on this topic on here over the years and if you search using the tool at the top of the screen, no one will need to reinvent the wheel and type it all out here again.  In short, we don't know how exactly crabs slough cycles are to the moon phases.  Most think that crabs near the ocean have longer seasons, slough more times and crabs in bays or rivers slough less often.  When you don't fish for soft shells and peelers, it's hard to know what they are really up to.  The guys who slough peelers do say the moon has a distinct effect.  Recreational crabbers here don't run peeler pots to study em.  Peelers and soft shells don't much get in traps or on trotlines so the few that do get caught are an the exception to the rule and not something that you can really base too much of an opinion on IMHO..... there's probably enough written about it on here to keep ya busy for a week... look for posts by "Pinchy"  laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

the moon dictates the shed full moon new moon both start and stop sheds but you also need water temp too the first shed of the year is usualy the biggest but there are sheds all summer with peaks and valleys Huh
