South Coast Massachusetts Report 08-21-09

Now that I have retired for the second time, I got a little time on my hands.............Went to all the spots shown on my maps and was quite surprised to see so many crabbers out there trying to get their share. The heat wave has been tough the past week, us Yankees just never get used to it. The Wareham River, behind Main Street was quite busy with at least 10 crabbers with necks and nets. One guy I talked to had at least 20 good sized crab in a bucket. The Weweantic Boat Ramp and the marsh at the Rt. 6 bridges seemed slow with only the occasional person seen working the shore. There was no activity at the Agawam and Mattapoisett Rivers and the Eel Pond spillway.
I am going to start slowing down with the crabbing as I have to find people to take them off my hands most times. Only a couple of family and friends still around to eat them........that will leave more for others to get. Lots of trash seen today and those of you who don't take your old string and trash with you should be ashamed. You are working very hard in closing access to good crabbing areas. It just makes me sick to see some beautiful areas just looking like a trash heap.
Hurricane Bob will miss us so there should be little or no impact on fishing and crabbing. Good luck and go get your share

You must have missed me cause I might have been at one of the spots you mention with 2 of my buddies. We were there from about 11am straight through to 3:45pm and caught one eel and 31 keepers! What a good time, most of them were just lurking about on the bottom and we just scooped them up, about 1/3 were caught with chicken. Caught one HUGE male that was about 6.5" across but his claws looked like they belonged on a 9 incher. Our catch let to one huge wok full of steamed beauties! I've had smoked eel on sushi before, but never realized how good grilled eel was, so tasty! YUM! My 2009 crabbin fix has officially been satisfied, I leave the rest to you! Go get em! enjoy the pics..

Great to see you getting your share FC..........looks great. I might have seen you and a lot of other guys last week. Things are picking up for us Yankees and I can truly say it is about time. This has certainly been a memorable year. First all the constant daily rain and now it is like a deep south Summer.............heat and humidity. At least I don't hear the furnace coming on every 10 minutes.
Keep up the good work and continue to get your share.

That big crab was so huge, that by the time I was done eating him, my two buddies were already moving onto their 3rd or 4th normal crab! wish I had more time to do this, but it's sort of like chinese food for me, if I get to demolish a good amount, it satisfies my craving for a good long time. Might try to go once more before summer's over, already starting to get cool out there!
