Crabbing near Rodanthy

I will be going down to Rodanthy next week 9-20. I have not been crabbing before and would like to try it. Can anyone tell me where is a good spot near Rodanthy. I don't have pot so I will be using cut bait on a line and a net. Would it be worth my time to do this or do I need a boat and pots to catch these guys? If so what is the best time? tide?location? bait?
