I'm not a hard core crabber but here you go. Went 2 weeks ago off Blue Point and caught 40 or so of which 12 were keepers. Went back yesterday around 2:00PM thinking the small ones may be bigger by now. Got off to a slow start. First few hours had a slow pick with 4 keepers then at the top of the flood had flurry of action with bigger crabs. Ended the day with 25 keepers. Used 3 traps with bunker and 4 drop lines with chicken legs. Caught most of the crabs in the last hour of the flood which happened to to be the last hour of daylight.

hey fellow crabbers.  only been a crabber for a few weeks now and this site has been a great place to get info for my new hobby.  thanks to all on this site!

i figure my last outing is as good as any for my first report on this site. was out at captree with my cuz on fri (9/11) after deciding to take a chance with the rain.  i remember reading a post that someone thought the crabbing would be better after some rain, when people wouldn't come out for a few days, so we thought we would give it a shot.  i don't know how true that is, but it definitely seemed to be the case on fri.  we got there a little past 9pm and were literally the only ones out there for a while.  well, us and a gang of seagulls at the end of the pier.  first two hours were slow...seemed to catch everything except blues - some fish, a stone crab, a hermit crab, and a ton of spiders.  i think we snagged around 8 spiders in one pull at one point.

then the tide started coming in, and from about 11 until we left at 2:30, it was real hot.  probably 75% of the time we were pulling up crabs, and a lot of the time we were pulling up two keepers at a time.  would have stayed longer if it wasn't getting so late.  we we went home with 37 using 6 traps, but no floaters to catch with the nets.  no record breakers...mostly in the 5 to 5 1/2 range and a few right around legal.  biggest one i measured was 5 3/4.  more than just the quantity tho, fri night was great because the weather stayed clear, we only had to throw back 4 or 5 shorts the whole night, and only two other groups joined us for the rest of the night.  checked out the other buckets and they all seemed to do pretty well too.  i wish every night crabbing could be like that. much better than two weekends ago, when me and my cuz went home with barely 10 using both nets and traps. (although a ranger did give us the keepers out of another group's confiscated bucket that night, but we ended up giving those to a bunch of our friends who were out crabbing for the first time.  i was happier to get credit from the man than to profit from someone else's crabs.)

back in early august we caught close to 50 using just nets but they were mostly in the barely legal to 5" range and hardly worth keeping.  that night was a great first time crabbing, but i have to say that fri night is probably my best night crabbing so far!  that's not saying much coming from a noob but you know what i mean.  anyway, i'm hoping that the rain i see in the forecast for this week actually happens and we get a repeat of last week.

Low tide tomorrow is 3 pm.
Going fishing first then hitting the crabs on the way back in.
Will give a report for the CT side tomorrow night.
So far they have been small and with the recent full moon they have been light with many softies.

Hey Shellfish. I was thinking of putting my 12' alum. in at Norwalk near the Maritime Center. And row up to the pilings at the Railroad track. And net em off the pilings. Would I be waisting my time? Not shure how good that area is . Never crabbed it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. MAKO.

Mako, I went out today at 3pm for low tide. Went to the railroad bridge and up river to the RT 95 overpass.
Got 15 off the pilings. Threw back a lot of whiteys and short crabs. They are certainly there!
The sizes are small though.

You can put in at the Maritime Center but I don't know if they will let you leave the car there. I use to put my 12' boat in at Veterans Park. They charge for it normally but the guy there then was reasonble and said if you don't use the ramp he wouldn't charge.
Right after 911 they wouldn't let you crab under the railroad bridge for "national security'! The last few years I haven't been bothered by anyone.  Good luck and have fun!

been away from the computer for a while but sheepshead bay and gerritsen creek has been treating us very well over the last 2 weeks. averaging about 50 from 7pm to 10pm or so off the pilings and docks. keeping only the larger males,  no complaints on this type of action from me thats for sure.

Mako, Did you ever get to the Norwalk Railroad Bridge? How did you do?
Got there this morning with about 12 keepers. Not as many but they are getting bigger!

Thanks for the report and glad to hear that you got some!
I only hit the Norwalk and Westport areas. Never been to Darien.
The crabs in Norwalk are getting a little bigger. Got a 7 incher the other day.
After looking at smalls for so long he looked like a monster!
When I measured him I was surprised he was only 7"!

Hit Captree yesterday. Still plenty of Crabs there but large Males were outnumbered by Feamales by 7 to1 . Must have caught at least 150 crabs, keeping my 50 crab limit. Started crabbing at 7:00 a.m. finished up by 12:30. Oh, and plenty of spiders around as well. Maby a dozen other crabbers on the pier. Used 8 traps baited with my favorite crab bait "bluegills".

I managed my 10-Lol Snapper limit in between pulling traps. I have no problem driving any distance, as long as it's worth it.
