"Black Tuesday" Navesink Report - 10/20

Well...........as much as it pains me to say it......the Navesink may have packed it in for the year.  Had a beautiful day on the water....with the temps hitting around 65, but.......the crabs just weren't there.  I crabbed from 8:45 to 4:45 and only managed 13 crabs.  Absolutely zero action on the drop lines......i mean not even a nibble in 8 hours!  Traps got them all.   The water is COLD......I would say it dipped to somewhere between 56 and 58 degrees.  It was the  kind of cold that when you stuck your hand in it...... the chill lasted for a few minutes.

I'm not ready to give up yet.........this string of warm weather is going to provide days to get out........the question is.........will the crabs be there when you do??

Really sorry to her that!  I was hoping to hit the place tomorrow- Thursday.

Tat.....I was anchored up right off the channel marker....was crabbing in 8-10 ft of water......don't know if I could have went any deeper without being in the channel..........

They might be running the channel.

thats a long time to be out there for 13 crabs. i was wondering what would happen to crabbing with last weeks weather. When i went on the 4th we did well close to the channel, prob 8-10 feet of water like you described, but they were still shallow as well and the water was still on the warmer side.  Did you move to a few different spots or anchor up with traps?  Hope its not over.

I moved all over.......tried a bunch of different spots.......mixing it up........shallow......deep......all the same result.

That deep sounds like high tide there.  I milked that spot to the bottom on outgoing and 7' was a little over 3' when I left.  You could see the traps and lines.  But for some reason the crabs inored the lines and stepped inside the cages.  hey go figure.

Trying tomorrow ( Thursday).  We shall see what the plan is.  Hi tide is 12:31pm.  Meaning most of my day will be slack or outgoing(not my favorite) to crab.  The opposite of fishing where I love the outgoing tides.

Thats how i killed it last week.......shallow water...on the incoming.....you could see the crabs walking up to the bait!  -non stop action for at least an hour!
