My last trip of the season Sad
Went down the Tank for a final shot at the crabs. Took off after work and headed down. This was my first afternoon trip ever. Arrived at the bridge at 12:50 pm. When I was walking down the bridge, there was thousands of spider webs every where. They were attached to the rail and  were streaming across the bridge. It looked so cool with the sun light hitting them, but they were all over me too. I never seen nothing like it. Anyway I had my 24 star traps and 1 snare baited up by 1:50 pm. First pull at 2:00 pm.
It was a very slow day, but the weather was very nice. It was in the low 70's with a light wind out of the south west and sunny. Very relaxing after a day at work. The traps were packed up, for the final time of the season, by 6:10 pm. The final count was 5 sooks, returned, 14 jimmys and 5 shorts, returned. They were  5 1/2" to 7".  By the way, I caught one of the jimmys with my snare. Jury still out on the snare. I would like to see how it works with a good run of crabs.

Well the fish didn't show up. Not one bite. I didn't see or hear of 1 fish being caught. I guess they went else where. Not even the regulars were catching anything. It's time to go for some rockfish, else where, of course. Some where closer to home. It's 90 miles one way to the Tank for me. As you all can see, the gas prices are on the rise again. It has jumped 20 cents in one week. What the hotel is going on?

Anyway, crabbing season is over for me. It's time to fish!
Good luck to the rest of you all, still crabbin'.  I'll be checking out your reports until there are no more.

I think a star trap is a strange looking trap that is not in rectangular or square form...but I am not sure...google it!  I'm sorry you did not have a good day, but just getting out there is enough for me!

Went out today...Crab Alley...started crabbing at 1:30...left at 5:30...7 crabs.  Nothing of size, but rusty...also caught a horseshoe crab!

I was dreaming of a half bushel today, but was not to be.  Not going to give up until I catch NO crabs.

what is a star trap and snare??

A star trap has a square bottom and 4 triangular sides. when dropped the sides open, just like a topless trap, and lay flat on the bottom. When you pull the trap the 4 sides close forming a pyrimid, trapping the crabs inside. I always referred to them as "Pyrimid Traps".

Don't know anything about snares.

I never told this to anyone here, but I fell off my bike when I was ten and cracked my head open. Concussion, stitches, and as is obvious, severe brain loss. Hard to believe that I'm only operating on half a brain. Can you imagine how smart I'd be if this tragic event hadn't happened. scholar

Hmmmm - maybe the same as Old Grouchy. I'm beginning to understand.......

When he was about 5 they were running around like the heathens they were (he's the youngest of 6) when he fell/was pushed/was dropped head first onto the potato pot and busted his head open. Don't ask me about the potato pot - I never saw it. All I know is that it must have been truly memorable since they all remember it as a real big scare. Then there was the time his oldest brother ran over him with the tractor......still has a scar from that.

Here is a picture of a crab snare I modeled mine after. Mine is a little different. My snare lines are not as heavy. I think the pictured snare is for dungeness crabs. I am going to try it some more next year. I would like to see if it works good when the crabs are running good. Then I will decide if it is worth making more or scrapping it. Stay tuned.
