Pax Still Rolling

Was out on saturday, glad we didn't listen to the weather. Was a but windy but it never rained except for a few minutes. Dropped the 1200 ft line around 8:00 a.m. Half baited with bull lips and the other half with necks. Necks did just slightly better then the lips. Was in 8-10 ft. Water temps about 60. First run 8, second run 8. After that it was 3 here, 4 there. Ended the day around 2 with a packed bushel of big crabs.
With the weather in the 60's this week they should hang around for a little longer. I did have to chase a few. They are starting to drop off the line a bit now. Might have to swith to traps.
We were letting the line soak 15-20 minutes between runs. We were chasing breaking fish. Only caught 4 throwback rock. All about 16''.

Bull lips last for 5-6 trips and the ugly buggers love'em. And they're pretty inexpensive. 20lb box is about $24. Only nasty part is you have to cut them up into 3 or 4 inch pieces.

Thanks for the heads up. Hadn't heard any word from Pax in a while so I thought it was a done deal down there. Might have to hit it in the next couple days to see how my sweet spot is holding up.

I've been doing well lately mid PAX but in shallower. More like 7' - 9' but that could change anytime.

Thanks for the report. I have a of couple questions.
1) Generally, how far up do you crab on the pax, both now and peak season? Between Solomons and Benedict? Does anything happen north of benedict? I'm preparing for next year, looking for info from the guys who seem to do well regularly.
2) Where do yall buy bull lips? I always get the response "a butcher shop". Seems like those are hard to come by in Maryland. Where are they!?!?
Have a great day.

To answer your first question:
It depends on the time of year, the amount of cool/hot weather and the amount of rain we have through out the year. crabs have been caught well above Benedict and as far south as the mouth of the river. As time goes on, you will learn to read the river and remember the spots you did well at through out the year. I personally start at the mouth on April 1st and finish the year around mid to late Nov back at the mouth. As the season progresses, I head north until the crabs tell me to head back south. Some stick with an area and when it stops producing, they are done for the season.

My father went out to his secret hiding place and got another 3/4 bushel of big males yesterday. He told he could have got more but they're dropping of the trot quick right now. So if any one is headed to the Pax you might want to consider using traps. He's still catching them in 8-10 feet, which is really surprising for this time of year.

Agreed but a good % hang on. Make sure you don't cast a shadow right now. We had cloud cover on FRI when we got 4 baskets and that may have helped. Funny how some will hang on almost out of the water while others deep six befire you can get em.
