will crabs/fish eat cracked corn
«
on:

I was told that if you have a pier on the currituck sound that you can throw cracked corn in the water and that the fish and blue crabs will eat this. Is this true? Will the fish and crabs eat the cracked corn?
I was not going to use this as bait, but only to feed the crabs and fish.
Thanks,
George

Many..
Many...
Many years ago..in a far away place...oh.. thats another story. When I very first started fishing the bay with my uncle
we or "he" would use cracked or whole kernel corn for winter flounder. Toilet plunger tied to a stick..( serious here )plunge up and down for a while, throw a hand full of corn in the water near the plunger and drop in your baited line..blood worms or canned corn were baits of choice, and hopefully catch a winter flounder. In my teens, fishing with other "Adults", I learned this was a bad practice as the fish could not digest the corn and many ate it and swam off to die..I should have known my uncle was wrong cause he got all his "corn" from a jug. Have also learned that many forms of natures critters cannot digest cracked or dried whole kernel field corn........

While fishing in Florida last year a guy said he used hog feed to attract the bass. And I know that wadded up white bread works too. So, I guess they'll check out most anything!!

Your uncle is a smart man because corn is much easier digested in the liquid form.

you're right ----- exactly -------- it's just like you said
I'm told uncracked corn passes thru the stomach undigested because the shell protects it.

My doctor told me since my bowel resection to stay away from corn for that reason....

Purina sow chow. It sinks and stays put. We use it to keep catfish around the boat and its digestable.
I'm sure crabs would eat it.

Give it a shot, (not literally..or literally, your choice
) but try it, see what happens. Crabs eat just about anything..maybe they'll care if jimmy cracks corn, nobody else did.

Corn is the bait of choice for the carp fishing crowd at Lake Marburg, between York & Gettysburg.
Cracked corn is used for chum, a single kernel on a circle hook is used for hook-up.

We use corn to bait carp in the fall & spring & catch them with a haul seine to stock pay to fish lakes & ponds in NC, SC,& GA...
back in the late 70's. I had some old soy bean cake that was getting moldy & dumped about 2 tons along the river shore to catch catfish...3 days later, made a haul on a full moon & caught 18,000 pounds of rock...
