Snood question
«
on:

I see some posts about using bungee snoods for baiting the gear and it would seem easier to bait and unbait, but are there any problems with the crabs chewing the bungee or do they generally last for a long time. How about the effects of salt water, rot, etc. I use net rings most of the time with the safety pin type bait holders, but it takes quite a while to spear 30 necks with them, especially having to do it in the dark of morning on those hot days when I can't bait right before going to bed at night. I prefer fresh necks rather than rotting ones.
I believe that I could adapt the snoods to my nets, but I want to be confident that they will have good longevity.

Bassman,
The only issue I see with using a snood in a trap, is that the crab may not be in the trap when you pull it. The object of havin the bait in the middle is to insure the crab will be in there when you pull it. If he is off to the side on one of the panels chewing, because the mobility of the snood allowed him too, there's a good chance he wont be in there when you get the trap up.

Bassman, I went out with lgc 3 or 4 times last year. He had some of his traps set up with snoods... They worked well, but keep it as short as you can...
Good Luck,

You must be thinking of securing the snood at the end near one of the knots.
I use a hog ring loosely crimped through the loop where the bait goes. When you pull on just one knot, I cinches the snood and bait down tight to the bottom of the trap. Works like a charm. I'll post some pics later. Gotta got to party #2!

What I did was made a "modified" snood.....
If you can imagine a "U" with overhand knots on each end...and then the bottom of the "U" pulled through a snubber.....I did this and wove it around the center of the trap before I made it....thus it snugs the bait to the center of the trap. If you don't understand BM me and I'll explain.

Thanks all for the info. Anybody have an opinion as to how long the bungee material will last under normal crabbing conditions?

Here's some shots of how I rig my traps. The key is to just pull one knot & let the other pull the snubber down to cinch up the bait. That is why you can't crimp the hog ring tight. The snood needs to slide through it.

Nice pictures - how to the screw driver handles work for bait? Must they be fresh or can you freeze them? How long do they last if the crabs are plentyful?
Good job Capt.

Keary, they last the whole season, maybe two. Problem is they are way more expensive than necks and you only catch these kinds of crabs which don't taste nearly as good as blue claws.

Same rig I use almost....I don't use the hog ring....just go under a corner. either way it works much better than a traditional snood.
