Name that fish?????
«

Was crabbing in the Navasink River in Red Bank,NJ and caught this very unusual fish. It was brown and all head with teeth about 8 inches long. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks.

Did it look like a prehistoric tadpole?
Look up toad fish, toe crusher or hacklehead.

If it had been a stargazer, he wouldn't have been worried about the 8" teeth. The shock that would have dropped him on his arse would be his main concern

The chewing bark remark had me rolling in tears
!
That's funny, I don't care who you are, that's funny!
Does a toad fish have 8" teeth? I've caught a few of them but don't remember them having big teeth.... Someone once told me that there is a nice chunk of meat in them ugly toadfish...never tried it for myself and don't plan to either. We always beat them on the side of the boat to get them off the hook...

...that fish WBoy put up was what we call "oyster crackers"...an' man are they ugly, but watch yer fingers...
.....we'd use pliers to get them off the hook......don't think that was the fish the guy was descibing, though, since he said its teeth were 8 inches
....maybe iy was a' Dracula' fish

toadfish--we call them oyster crackers. No teeth. Big Asian market for them now. I have not caught many this year. Finally they are getting rid of a fish nobody wants. Don't know if thats good or bad.

THINKING......
Seriously now, if you were serious that is!
Cant be an oystercracker (toadfish) teeth arent 8 inches, a "possible" is a stargazer, but still the teeth are more like 4 inches. My Gulper commet was in jest, that leaves a lost Goosefish (also called MONKfish) they can get 4ft long and like 2 ft wide I think. They are an abyssmal fish and are very (as most o those deep critters) strange looking.

I should clarify. The fish was 8 inches long. The teeth were little but the fish scared the %$#% out of me. You never know what your gonna bring up. I guess that's part of the fun.
