Hello All,
Just wanted to drop everyone a line and welcome the fast approaching season. I don't think I've posted since September...even though I read the site just about everyday. Getting the "Little Orca" serviced next weekend. Hoping my motor prevailed over the harsh January we had. Should only need a few new pieces of equipment this year...(a few new traps, handlines, buoys for the pots and some sinkable rope.) I may get a trolling motor for the upcoming fresh water trout season to keep myself occupied until the end of May. Possibly do some striper fishing too. Hope all is well w/ everyone. Looking forward to a peaceful and successful season.

Crabguy,
Funny!!I knew you were going to ask. I was reading some old posts from last year...lol.
Thanks for asking. I had another very successful season. I bagged 7 this year. One short of last year's total..and my best year. I always make a late run w/ the shotgun (doe) seasons. Bagged 5 in January. One w/ the bow this year. As a whole, between 7 of us, we bagged 36. I was second this year as the leader bagged 11 and several bucks. He killed an early season 8-point w/ the velvet still on. He just got the mount back. Beautiful animal. Apologies to the rest of the board for getting off topic......
Anyhow, Crabguy, are you ready for this season?...and oh, yes, how was your deer season?

Hey Bdc,

I'm a new member to this board, and am enjoying the posts. I see you're in South Jersey(?)

did you take all those deer in Jersey? excellent.

I'm up in Great Bay, we had a couple stripers caught a few weeks ago, then the weather went south and everything stopped again. Last night it was only 16 here, but they say a warm wave is on it's way.

I did see some bait fish making ripples last evening, that's the first of the season, and tells me we're getting close

Dancincrab,

I'm am very very new to striper fishin...(the last two years). I've only caught two in my life and actually only went twice (10 & 15 LBER)The two i caught were during my first time out and it was up near Bordentown on the Delaware River...so it was catch and release up that way. I'm interested in going but am at a loss of where to go. I know they run up the mouth of the Mullica so that's probably my best bet...b/c that's most familiar to me since that's where i crab mostly.......
Only 1 out of those 36 was killed out of state (Maryland)...the rest were south jersey. Thanks for the compliments and welcome to the board...it's the best board for crabbing....hands down!!! Lott'o great people on here and a wealth of information. Again, welcome!!

CW,
I usually launch out of Chestnut Neck and head up river. What tides are the best and is the parkway bridge a good spot?

CW,
What method would you use at this time of year.  Drift or anchor? Live bait? clam? Blood worms? Yo-zuri lures?...Bait caster or spinning reel?
thanks for any info

With the water cold like it is you need to anchor use blood worms when it gets to about 52 degs then you can start plugin Wink

CW 18 inches most of the seasons, with 28" max.  32" min during trophy season.   The creeks were loaded with 16 to 24 inch fish last year.  They were a pest out of season, eat'n up soft crab baits before any other fish could get a chance at em.. Grin

CW and Bdc..

I know this is a crab board but... I can't pass up chattin a bit about stripers. I've never fished the mullica, not yet anyway. Done relatively well out in the bay, by the fish factory, and mikes bar. My boy got his first this year, 14lb'r and I got 5, the biggest just 19 however.

Either of you ever been to the striper tourney run by Sea Shells motel and Rest. on LBI? It's a hoot. We enter every year, last year nuthing, but year before we took 3rd and 7th ( about 2500 bucks). The real hoot however is the "feast" on Sunday. All the fish weighed in have to be donated to the rest. and on Sunday they have a 10 dollar all you can eat buffet for the public. Blackened striper, cajun, broiled, fried, popcorn, you name it along with salads, potato's, veggies, it's a real feast and a lot of fun. It's a great way to chat with the other guys and it generally has about 100 boats that enter.

Anyway, I was scoping out that parkway bridge in the mullica, since Roger at Chestnut neck rebuilt my suzuki. I'd bet a nice fat sandworm drifted between those abutments would produce.

Crabguy,
You know as well as I.....the meat is the most important!!!!Can't eat those horns...although i wouldn't be upset to take a buck. None this year for me....all does. year before i killed a nice 6-point....mounted him as he was the first buck i've taken w/ a bow. However, great job this season!!! How many guys do you have?....That's a lot of cutlets, roasts, fillets, tenderloins....ect. Once again good job and good luck on your first voyage of the season. Talk to you soon.

Hey BDC, I thought some of you would appreciate that shot. Besides catching and eating crabs there is nothing more relaxing to me then spending time on the water on a beautiful sunny day. It helps me release the stress and tensions of the job. And I think this shot says it all. It's got my blood boiling and ready to go.

I am sorry Kristie Yes they do. Row Boats are $26, motor boats are $65. If you have a motor you could put it on a row boat. Get there early though, they open at Sun Up. There are about 6 motor boats, but when crabbing is hot you get right in front of the place.

Kristy, here’s a link to the Talbot County Maryland boat ramps.  After you bring it up, mouse on Wye Landing. After that, mouse on “Click here to get location map and directions.”
This is where Schnaitmanns Boat Rentals is located on the eastern shore of Maryland, on the Wye River, home of the “monster” blue crabs. As Joe said, get there early...before sunup, as the boats go fast in the summertime. The Wye River is not just beautiful, it's heaven on earth! Good luck.
