NO Tongue Tongue Tongue...BFDB...use a milk gallon container that is cut in half...or a cheap flower pot like they have at Wal Mart...filled with concrete, these will weigh approx 15 lbs... Wink...You use 5 gallon buckets, you'll need King Kong to pull them off the river bottom  Wink Cheesy

close...it would weigh ~80-85 lbs.

1.5 gallons is 25lbs for medium density concrete.  I'd put it in your 5 gallon bucket and saw the extra bucket off after it cures.  In the past, I've measured with water and marked a line, then pour it out and go with concrete to the line.

Consider attaching something to your eyebolt with 2 hex nuts before you set it in the concrete....like a piece of angle iron, thin plate, or big washer, etc.  Keeps it from pulling out over time.  Also, use concrete with small smooth aggregate, like pea gravel in ready mix bags.

Hey Chris , do you only use one block at each end ? That don't sound like much holding power , but if it works for you  it must be O.K.

one yard of concrete weighs 3700lbs (27 cubic feet) I help a chain link fence guy. When we have leftover concrete, we pour about 4"-5" in plastic 5 gal. buckets. They make great "paver" stones. After 2 days they pop out  of the bucketseasy. A 6"-10" one with an eyebolt makes a good anchor.

I think I'll try to find me a couple of 2 gallon cleaning buckets at the dollar store. I'd still prefer some 25 lb PLASTIC free weights though less likeley to f up my boat. I work for a concrete construction company too bad I work in the office but I got a  fellow fisherman/crabber who is a super so maybe he can finesse me a couple of test cylinders with epoxy coated rebar that happens to be bent with an eye and stuck in the middle. Make that 4 of them since I amgoing to run 2 lines.

For what it's worth, I looked into making my own weights too. After analyzing the cost for materials and time, I found that 20 lbs dumbells work the best.

You can get them at Wally-World for under $20 or watch yard sales for them.

They stow easily and the hexigon shape keep them from rolling.

I use a slip knot on my float roap to slip them on and off.

Good Luck. Wink

you can also use rebar.
take a gallon milk jug and cut it in half, fille with concrete.take 5 rebars and put into the concrete.using the concrete as the center wieght.
it will end up looking like a sphere with rebar sticking out in all directions.
then you can take a torch and bend the ends of the rebar at 30 degree angles.
once dragged on the bottom this thing will not move.
i assume this is to anchor your boat.
for trotline i recommend using brake rotors.you can drop them in,then drag them until they are stuck well into the mud.they wont budge.
thing is you really dont need much of an anchor when using chain with trotline.i drop in one rotordrag it until its stuck, then run the trotline,
then trotline to chain to bouy, then i throw the other rotor, and yank on it.good to go,with no worrys about having to every move the torline the whole time.

my problem when I tried the round bucket anchor was that they rolled around on a hard bottom with the current or wave action.

my solution for an anchor was three old window weights with a bolt thru them and my chain attached to the bolt. I had a brass clip on my trotline to hook to the chain

no rolling on bottom and those things don't rust. ask somebody that restores old houses, they throw them away  Grin Grin Grin

Boy I'd hate to mess up my pristine boat w/ cinderblocks.....I do like the idea of using a 20# plastic coated round weightlifting plate.  I might go that way for the trotline.  I guess I'll just have to stop working out.  [dang].

IF the idea of the cinder blocks is the fact they don't slide, then they could be Rhino coated. Other similar stuff can be bought online & brushed on.
IF it's becaus the're just cheap, then duct tape em. Grin Grin

bang, I work for a material testing company and made my own trot anchors out of test molds...NOT A GOOD IDEA...because they are round they will roll on the bottom and really mess up your trot.  Steal 2 cinder blocks off your job site, thats what I use and have never had a problem with them slipping, take about a 6 foot x 2 foot piece of carpet with you on the boat and bring the blocks up over that so you don't f up the boat if they bang against it
