Cost per crabbing trip and other thoughts...

i was reading somewhere where the average cost per small recreational boat is 500-600 per day of actual use... that is for a rec boat!  the reason is people dont use them that often most of the time, os they go out 6 times a year and pay 2k to dock it, and depreciation of the boat value as well plus all the maintenance.

per trip costs are operational costs (ie, you dont spend it if you dont go)
Fixed costs are what get you cause they add up even if you dont go crabbing (maintenance, depreciation)

yea, uhh... dont let your wives on the website and see this thread!      If you like crabbing DONT THINK ABOUT IT!  but if you are planning on catching crabs to lower your food bill.... uhhmmm, better pick up a bushel off a comm crabber

see the laugh?..this was Kennys(Crabbygramps)  first trip on the Wye  ..I dare anybody to put a price tag on that kind of memory  ..I'm just fortunite to see that kind of laugh when I go crabbin with someone  can anybody tell me how much that laugh costs?

Permits 100 per year various  not counting that either because i have to have some fun and dont care.

Crab gear replacement.. dont care either hey tennis whites are several hundred dollars for that game and crowd and I dont play tennis!,, A guy has to have some recreatioin and fun. No golfing for me either.

Actually If I count all costs I could probably buy a bushell cheaper, yea I could, years ago you could crab pretty cheap today only if you live where the crabs are with gas cost. Yea It costs me about the same for a bushel if I catch them or buy them and it costs me a lot lees fto buy a bushel when I am skunked but its a sport for me thats PRICELESS..

I am spoiled compared to you guys. My wife's boss lives on a tidal creek here in Charleston, SC, and I just drop my pot in the water off her dock on my way to work in the morining, and return to pick it up or add bait if necessary. My costs are minimal. I use turkey necks, and shrimp heads as bait most of the time. We buy shrimp off the dock in Rockville, and get a great deal ( arppox $20.00 for 5lbs w / head on) . We de-head them at home, and I freeze the heads just for crab bait. I usually get two dozen crabs a day in the one pot / spot.  I can't complain at all.

Hey crab bleeder, my sis lives in Mt Pleasant, when I'm down (2 times a year with my boys) we always hit the Wando Shrimp company.  Excellent shrimp and can't beat thelow prices there.  Have you ever hit Vickery's?  Last time had a great shrimp salad there.  We also go surf fishing down by fort Moultrie.  Lots of flounder there.

Hey DOMNIKDYL, hope you enjoy the "Lowcountry" on your visits. I am on the other side of Charleston ( west of the Ashley). I do get over to Mt Pleasant quite often. I have never been to Vickery's, but hear its good food. Shem Creek is loaded with many great seafood places. There are so many great Seafood restaurants here in Charleston, that its hard to pick one sometimes, but its also hard to go wrong regardless of choice.

I've gotten lucky recently. There is a fella, and his wife, that drive down to Rockville ( about the same distance from me as Mt. P), and get several coolers full of shrimp from the dock, and then drive back to West Ashley, and set up shop under a Tin Roof. I drive 2 minutes from my house, and get a great deal on the freshest local shrimp available. Our local shrimp is the best in the world IMHO. Man I am gettin hungry typing this post.
