I was wondering where I could get some heavy duty leather welder's gloves for handling crabs. I just can't seem to find a suitable pair. Thanks for any help!!

Quick question; a local newspaper had an article on the continuing problem with rock fish (stripers) in the bay having sores on them, caused by a bacterial infection. The article cautioned about handling these fish; some people have been "spiked" by the dorsal spines and later came down with the same infection, which can take a heck of a long time to go away, even with medical treatment. Now, it was suggested in the same article that people wear "kevlar" gloves, that cost around $45.00 a pair. Anybody heard of these, or tried them out. Kevlar is used in bulletproof vests. Supposedly a fish spine won't pass through the glove because of the overlapping tightness of the weave. Would these gloves also be good for crabs? Inquiring minds want to know...

I have never seen or heard of these, but they're obviously out there. It's just that kevlar is going to be so expensive (i.e. you said they are $45 a pair) that it isn't worth spending the money on them. The tight weave is strong so it spreads out a bullets energy, absorbing the impact. A crabs claw pressure will be constant and I wouldn't think that kevlar would be any more
comfortable
than a thick leather glove. Again, I have never seen, heard of, or used a kevlar glove; I just don't think it would be worth using it.

You can get Kevlar gloves at any restaurant supply house. They are woven material and will protect you from getting sliced, but not stabbed. I use them for cleaning crabs, live or cooked.
