Just caught a 9 inch blue crab
«
on:
August 20, 2006, 08:11:38 PM »
I just caught a 9 inch blue crab (shell tip to tip).
It's the biggest one I've ever seen and wondered if it's close to a record.
It's still live, so I was wondering if I should keep it that way...or just enjoy eating it.
Can anyone let me know if it's significant?
Thanks
P.S.- My first post on this forum, so please forgive if it's a stupid question.
Thanks

Not a record, but take a picture of it and post it. Measure it on the top, straight ruler best results. Nice job.

Only after we destroyed the crabbing. When I was living in the Jurrasic period
, we caught 8" crabs with an occasional 9" on Long Island all the time.
Jersey too. Not any more.
Then that's Wye I travel to MD.

I just caught one last Saturday too in the Gunpowder. Congrats! Great feeling! I am mounting mine. He's in the freezer but I think I am busting him out of there tonight for a few more pics to get a better more accurate look. hopefully he didn't shrink in the freezer. I was out there by myself crabbing with no tape measure.... I was like, [dang] if that ain't the biggest crab I've ever seen... anyway, enjoy and nice job!

Thanks for all the replies. It was actually over 9 inches. Once I got it out of the trap and measured it properly I realized it was 9.5 inches.
It has a 19 inch span from claw tip to claw tip.
And it was delicious!!!
There were also 8 additional crabs in the trap by the next day when I pulled it out.
Here's a url to view some photos of it

Nice looking crab Mako, but take a look at your other photo's where you stretched him out, that tape measure underneath is a very deceptive shot, believe me I know. Nice mudder.

CALIPERS!
None of these tape shots are worth anything.... its all smoke... you gotta measure point-to-point squared up... all this over/under stuff.... you can't tell the length within 2 inches!
