No joke: I've used all plastic hair rollers in large filter units without problems.  They're much cheaper!  You can cut them in half to fit more into a given area..they pack closer that way.

Other than sand there is not much that can give you more Sq. ft of surface area than a cubic ft of oyster shell, and the bacteria that you  need to grow is a surface growing bacteria, the oyster shells help keep your PH balanced

Bio-Blox filter media is an ultra high surface area media that is created from a variety of different filter thicknesses and densities. Bio-Blox is a loose fill media that is inexpensive and ideal for filling large filters. Use our Mesh Bags to hold Bio-Blox for easy handling. Put a couple of rocks in the bag to weight it down in the filter. Approximately 525 square feet of surface area per cubic foot.

Item Name: Bio-Blox Filter Media
1 Cubic Foot, 6 lbs. Item Number: RBB1 Price: $37.73
