not sure for pa,but if you plan on getting it for maryland,you can do what i have done.

goto the dnr,pick up a boater safety course magazine then call dnr for a testing station.
its alot cheaper than a safety course and its really the only option since you need to sign up a year before in order to attend next years safety courses as they are booked.also safety courses run between 20-60 dollars compared to a free test.

No substitute for a boating course! Saving your life is worth what you might pay.

The United States Power Squadrons (Google Search) and the Coast Guard offer top notch courses. You can find when and where classes are held and the cost, etc. Stay away from all courses which are not proctored (no teacher) that includes internet courses. They are NOT recognized as qualifying courses by the State. You can get a discount from your insurance company with proof of successful completion.

I was an instructor for the Power Squadron courses for 5 years and can vouch for that course plus the Coast Guard.

Anyone born after July 1, 1972 MUST have proof of passing a qualfied course to operate a boat in Maryland waters. Unfortunately, there are lots of lousy boaters born before that time who have no idea what they are doing and have never taken a test.

it all depends on whether or not you rather get your experience on the water,or in a classroom.i prefered getting my experience on the water,because im a hands on guy.i dont believe sitting in a room for 8 hours will teach me anything,compared to being on the water with someone who knows the rules then teaching it to me,then testing on it.thats my take,but everyone has thier own way of learning.some people are great at reading a book,others are great doing things hands on.

I took this course a few weeks ago in Jersey done by the Power squadron, it is a good course, a 1 day or 2 4hr day courses, I learned quite a few things..

             The rest of us would prefer that new boaters at least learn the basics(i.e. rules of the road for one) before you get on the water

We crammed the 8 hr course into 4 hrs and aced it myself Grin Try "thebassbarn" Tatoo. Search for boaters course. You will find it.

Now isn't that interesting....I still like the fact that I took the course and wouldn't change that.....however - my wife can't legally drive the boat while I'm crabbing w/o taking a course.

I'm thinking I should try to talk her in to taking this online one so she can have a valid license for steering while I'm netting.

 I admit I am really old fashioned, but for me learning what a course taught first sure helped me the first time I took a boat out myself.

There are just too many boats out there operated by too many people who do not know the rules of the road. Practical experience is great but it must be combined with a knowledge of the rules and a lot of other things.

I know a lot of people with tons of practical experience who would not give way to a sailboat; pass too close or cut others off. That is where the books come into play.

Don’t look for cheap and easy because your loved ones deserve more than that.

Online is NO GOOD in NJ. Can't imagine it would go in Md either. For practice, or studying ok, but not the test. Anyone could take the test, and have the book for answers in front of them?
