shed tank /auto top in works
«

alright don't laugh I am in the process of make a motorized top for my shed tank---- My reason is for one I just think it would be cool but also my tank is 4 by 8 and I cant reach to the other side and if I hinge the top, I would lose access to one side. My drawing is not that good either so bear w/ me I am about to make my idea , and I will post pics as I get them
the drawing is just the motor and shaft (thats under the tank) that will wind up the rope that connecting the top
I am bored right now and just figured out how to scan and post pics

I forgot to say each corner post will be set up with 2 maybe 3 pulleys and the motor will be geared down to turn slow; and the wheel on the right side is a manual wheel in case the power goes out.

Just use a peeler net or plastic tongs to fish up and then you can reach all the way across, thats why these girls like the 3.5 ft wide tanks i have the best

I could do that and I would if I had crabs in there; but every thing I love to do revolves around summer time and this would give me something to think about and do till then-
this project is why I asked you about that motor

I went to get all the parts to do this; and it will cost about $250 so with that said I am now going to spend $8 and hinge it on one side. I think it would be neat but not for $250

Word to the wise, Gluvit does deteriorate if left unpainted or w/o a top,so I was forced to do something about a top soon. here is my new plan. Much cheaper; each corner of the top will have a eye bolt, connected to a higher pulley, then I will figure out weight of top + Resistance of pulley =weight on end of each 4 ropes, then top would open and close within 1 lb, sort of like old windows. and then I will have assess to all sides.

Jeff,
It does look good. When you get some time, could you post pics of the tanks and your set up?
Thanks,
ChrisS

Chris, I will, but at this moment the tank is underconstrution. The gluvit I used to seal the wood has leaked so I now have to re gluvit it or I am thinking I might fiberglass over, if I can.-------Jeff

...Jeff, I thought of using that stuff as well with my tanks, but ended up sucking it up and bought pondliners and concrete mixing trays. The trays are 2'x4' and 4 sit tightly on one 4x8 framed sheet of plywood on the stand. I use them to seperate the crabs. The other is framed and lined with the pond liner @ 4'x8'.
Sounds like I should be glad I didn't use it.

Chris, the Gluvit worked good, but the sun deterates it, also I had to move it 3 times which I am sure the flexing didnt help.
How does the pond liner work? that sounds easier then fiberglassing my tank. Where did you buy the liner?

I got it from a local landscaping place, that sells pond supplies. It's priced at 70 cents a ft/2. About 40 dollars to do one 4'x8'x 10" deep, tank. Works really well.
