I'll be moving to the south shore (mid-island) and would appreciate some crabbing information.  When do people typically start crabbing?  Any general areas I should think about?

Thanks

You should see them start to show up around June or so. Look in some back bays that are protected and with a freshwater in flow. I don't know much about Long Island so you will have to look yourself. Stop in and talk with the bait shops. They should point you in the right direction.  Good Luck!

The best spot that I have crabbed on LI is at Robert Moses State park on Captree Island, not the part that is on Fire Island. The docks often get packed in the morning, but it is a definite hot spot for blues.

What prev reply mentioned is Captree State Park. There are two fishing piers in the park. One on the party boats sides is more productive than the one by the bridge. If you have access to south shore town docks, I heard they are better pick since it is less fished. I love going there and catch a few blue crabs and steam them with Old bay...  Good Luck!
