To keep the crabs from losing there legs when you steam them put them in the refrigator or soak them in ice water for 15 mins, and it will calm them down

Another tip:
Before putting them in a pot, take an ice pick, insert it in the center of the back under the carapace and pierce the heart. By doing this the crab is killed and this prevents crabs from pulling off other crabs' swimming legs or getting rid of their own claws. Crabs, when confined, will shed their own claws as a defense mechanism if they think their claws are the reason they cannot escape.
As long as you put them directly in a pot after "soaking" them for 15 minutes that's okay but crabs will drown if soaked. It's better to put ice on them but make sure they do not sit in the water as it melts.

Hey mariner - where exactly do you place the ice pick? I've tried this method a couple of times but must not be hitting the right spot.
Do you drive the pick down through the carapace from the top if so where, or slide it under from behind where the carapace meets the apron? I must have poked 5 holes in some big crabs and they just got madder, so resorted to the ice bath technique.

right under the carapace in the center. push the ice pick in more than halfway towards the front and simply push it from side to side. The heart lies close to the center of the inside. If you have 'em iced down first they will not get you when you do this.

I've been using the ice pick before steaming them for years.I find it more humane than having them die from the steam, plus I'm able to wash them pack them into the pot, season them, much better than if they were jumping around trying to escape, plus you have a nice pot of crabs with their claws still attached.

Dude! Sorry about your head.
Did this happen at birth, or was it something you ate?
Don't worry - I don't think anyone else even noticed.

Just be sure to keep your head above the water line.

about the picture and where to stick em
if ya go straight down as in the picture, you hit the brain but some folks go from the point of the apron and go forward ( helps hide the hole), some go from the back and go forward.( hide the hole and away from the claws) -- your choice, all these ways avoid the claws which bite in front and upwards
