DON'T trust your home state to use "sound" science either
Most of the "sound science" is based on GRANT MONEY, it's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ You can take that to the BANK!!!

yeah their sound science is based on gestimates. its my understand that here they base quotas and catches on the fact that one buys a license to fish, goes fishing, and has potential to catch the full limit. "sound science" such as these estimates are why i cant catch and keep 5 or 6 red snapper for dinner of an edible size while the commercial red snapper limit when untouched this season and they still have a lower size limit than rec fisherman. of course i also have a shrimp boat so im on the other side of this thing two. they say that commercial shrimpers kill 90 percent of the juvenile snapper. ive never seen a juvenile snapper in my shrimp net much less a full grown one. anyway being an alabamian im a little torn over the issue because yes as in everything there are people that abuse gill netting, but over all these are good hard working people with families to support, and with real hard numbers on what they take and what there is to potentially take, and how long it takes the population to recover, there is no good way to regulate gill netting or to say one way or the other if they should stay or go.

You are right in the middle,in the western gulf shrimping is mostly to blame for over fishing of Red Snapper but in the eastern gulf it is Recreational fishing that is to blame Gill nets are easy to regulate mostly through mesh size but the CCA don't care,we had over 200 rules, regs and statues on gill nets in Fla, plus a huge portion of the water was closed to us and they still got them by constitutional amendment, A liberal Yankee will believe anything in print and vote for it, no questions asked

the two groups that are battling over use of fish are recreational fishermen and the general public who eat fish. commercial fishermen provide a service of catching fish for the public who chose not to go fishing but want a part of the public resource. eating fish can extend your life for years as has been determined by several hundred studies, and I dont think we should deny the resource to 90% of the population so 10% can play big white hunter.
sound science? actually very poor elementary math skills! on the CCA md website they claim 40 commercial fishermen catch 95% of all yellow perch in MD. considering the yellow perch are about 55% recreational, that means that these 40 fishermen catch 100% of the commercial fish and 90.9% of all recreationally-caught fish! wow, they must be busy!

I see over on TF that they now want to sponsor a "Crab tournament". If they believe that the crab population is so far gone then why is the CCA wanting to futher it's decline, answer is they really could care less about the crab itself, this is just another way of recruiting Rec's into the crab fishery and getting their support in the future to help get rid of more Watermen...............Mark don't think that the general population cares, when time comes they will believe the propaganda put out by the anti Commercial groups, most really don't care where their seafood comes from.

Nothing like taking 6 yrs for action on this. One of the CCA'S best BS propaganda speeches is that we can import all the seafood we need in this Country.Do away with the waterman, give the regular Rec fisherman just enough of a bag limit for 1 meal and then the rich will have all the big fish to play catch and release with except for the high dollar tournaments where they have to land the fish.
