Back Bay
«

First of all, I'll introduce myself. I'm Kevin, live in Virginia Beach, Ford Jr Master Tech, been fishing/crabbing since day 1.
I did a search and came up with nothing so I'll go ahead and ask. I am wanting to know if Back Bay is any good for crabbing/fishing and if so, where to go? I know the wildlife refuge is right there and I'm not entirely sure if it is legal to fish/crab on the refuge.. I also know there is a peir down at the Game Wardens head office. Is that any good?
And incase anyone here does fish, the flounder are hittin quite hard in both the Chesapeak Bay and Lynhaven.. Been reelin in some nice 1's the last week or so..
Thanks in advance
Kevin

So I just tried "the Locks" that I saw in another thread.. Yea, not so hot..
4 hours of crabbin and either A: I caught the same crab about 40 times or B: Every crab in the water is 4 inches..
Not impressed and the water is dirty as [Sam Hill]..
On better notes, when to Chesapeak Bay Bridge Tunnel peir (Seagull Peir) and caught about 15 Striper, all decent size from 15-24 inches.. Very fun night untill it started raining..

Dirty it is... I think its been the wind. Been blowing almost not stop since Feb. Right now its 10 to 17mph out of the NE. Crabbing has yet to turn on. The lower bay is full of Rock, ur right about that. Not good for the crabs either... Between the Rock and Croakers I don't see how a peeler makes it thru....

Yea I figured that..
I see you post alot about places in Hampton Roads.. Have you ever been out to Back Bay? I took a drive out there this weekend to do some investigating to put my boat in and it looks like it might be a few decent crabbin spots..

Hey, did you ever get an answer to your Back Bay crab question? I'm new to VAB and wondering the same thing.

Yeah I know some VA Beach boys who have largemouth bass fishing tournaments there on a regular basis. Of course later (up here) in the year Middle River area is full of crabs and it is big for Bass tournaments.

Actually, I don't think Back Bay is totally fresh water. It's tidal, so that probably means it's brackish. Largemouth Bass occur in fresh and brackish water, and crabs, depending on their gender, time of year, etc exist in salt, brackish, and even up into fresh water rivers and estuaries. This I know. So my question remains, does anybody know how the crabbing is there?
