I Love Crabs!

« on: June 08, 2007, 02:07:22 PM »

Being a relatively new member, it can get frustrating from time to time hearing people talk about specific places and not really knowing where they are.  It can also be time consuming digging through past posts to find information.  That being said, I have put together a list of places to rent boats for crabbing in NJ.  Atleast now it's all in one place for easy reference for other newbies like myself.  And by all means, feel free to add to it.  I've gotten alot of help from this forum.  Just trying to return the favor, and pass along the good vibes!  Have a good weekend everybody.

All of the locations at the bridge are about the same distance away from Maple Creek. And everyone at the places are all really friendly and helpful.  Dividing Creek Boat Rentals tends to be a couple dollars more for the boat but, he has the most complete shop for supplies. I have my own boat but always get bait and traps from Joe.  He has package deals on traps that are actually cheaper than going to the local Walmart.  He also has some special boats with canopies if the sun bothers you and larger boats for bigger parties (of course at an extra charge).  If you're gonna rent a boat on any weekend it's always a good idea to reserve one.  Also, pay attention here for your crab reports as they will tend to paint a rosier picture than you may find.

Good Luck!

I'm planning on heading out somewhere in NJ... Most likely the Navesink.

I know that Sea Land has really great prices, but I couldn't find any information on how many people a row boat from them will carry. I'm planning on going out with my dad and brother and myself... And I plan on coming in with 3 bushels of crabs and no brother.  Tongue

Smiley

Ok, ok... lets not kid... 4 bushels. laugh

Does anyone on here know how many a standard row boat from Sea Land will hold? Thanks.

I think I have had 3 large adults and a child on the row boats at Sea Land. I know I have had 2 large adults and 2 kids.  I would say 3 adults should be safe.

Anyone care to suggest a couple boat rental places on the Shrewsbury for around $35.00/day? Thanks.

Great... Thanks! I'm thinking I might still play it by ear on whether or not I'm going to being renting from Oceanic or Sea Land... I guess it really just depends where the crabs are.

From the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission site linked by clanshrapnel:

"MVC issues motorboat and Jet Ski licenses for use on fresh, non-tidal waters or lakes, creeks or rivers not affected by tidal conditions."

This means you do NOT need a license on tidal water, where crabs are caught. Most people need to take a boating safety course, but that, again, is NOT a license.

I was talking to a few rental places and they said to rent a boat they can give you a 15 min course, just to make the renters aware, I heard this at DC and in newport. It is something the state is making the rental companies do..
