I've got some soon to be new neighbors that are moving down from Jersey that want to try crabbing.

My thing is is that I'd like to get them out on a pier with some string and necks; they way I learned as a child.  The problem these days is that there really isn't any place where one can still catch a decenct amount of crabs like that.

Can anyone recommand a pier where one can go crabbing with some string and necks?  What I'd really like is an area witha pier and some marshs where I could walk and pick some softies up also.

Thank All!!

You can go neckin off the peir at Matapeke. Take 301 south to the last exit before the bay bridge (stevensville/ romancoke) go to the left and straight down the road to matapeke. It costs 4 bucks to park take a long net cause its a high dock. good luck dude  Grin

Where are you and your friends regionally located?

I currently live in Abingdon, MD (Harford County), my future neighbor is living in a apartment in Elkton waiting for his home to be built.

I don't think they mind a long drive to go handline some crabs as long as they catch some, and I know, I enjoy catching crabs with a handline more then running a trotline.

Since the good old days are gone and there doesn't seem to be any place where one can catch a decent number of crabs from shore, I'm going to take my boat out and run to the Tred.

I just hate the long drive with a boat in tow, especially to a place I have no idea where it is.  But what the heck, it's gotta be quiet on the Tred compared to a place like the Severn or the Wye on a weekend.

Let me know if you have a suggestion, and Thanks!!

Max,

Problem for me crabbing off the pier there is that I don't think I would get anything.

When I was younger, we use to go to Romancoke Pier and easily catch a bushel of crabs using handline and some softies walking the grasses in the Bay.  In the last 10 years I've been there, I've caught exactly ZERO crabs on handlines or traps.  With Matapeake being so close to there I don't think I'll get anything.  Are crabbers off that pier usually succuessful?

Unless I hear something good about handlining, I'm pretty much set on getting my trotline ready and dragging my boat to the Tred.  Thanks for your suggestion.

We have had limited success at the matapeke pier. I sure do wish the romancoke peir was still there. I wonder If they will ever rebuild it?
