My take on the rules and regulations is if there isn't anything in print that says we can not use our topless traps I'm going to use them until someone tells me otherwise.  It doesn't make any sense that you can use 2 pots and 2 handlines only, think about it.  Who in the He(( is going to drop 2 pots out there and then anchor up with 2 handlines.  It doesn't explain enough anyway........do they mean 2 pots and 2 handlines per person or per boat?  Oh well, I guess I'll find out the hard way.

That was my main thing.  I wasn't planning on keeping any today, just wanted to see f I could find one or 2.  There's a LOT of current there.  I weigh down my traps with a railroad spike and they still move quite a bit before hitting the floor.  btw....IF you want to use the peir, make sure you have about 25-30 ft of rope on your traps.

Hey Tat, if I get a couple, you want em?

I was out trying to fish yesterday and even though tons of big catfish were there most of my bait was stolen by crabs. There are tons of them out there right now. They are really good sized as well. I caught and brought a few home the other day. They were kind of hit and miss on eating though. Some were wonderful and some were full of nasty silt from the river.

For what it's worth: http://www.fish.state.pa.us/fishpub/summary/00consumption_advisory.pdf

No mention of crabs, but from Trenton to the PA/DE border there is a DO NOT EAT advisory for eels and carp because of PCB contamination. Looks like the crabs are probably OK, as long as you avoid the yellow junk inside.

I phoned someone at the PA Dept. of Env. Protection. They haven't done testing on blue crabs yet. Oddly, NJ doesn't say a word about the Delaware River (they probably think of South Jersey as a separate state). laugh The DEP in DE is doing testing, but results not available yet. Here's the fish health advisory link for the state of DE; it's a little troubling because it basically says - "Don't eat anything out of the Delaware River."

On the other hand, DE allows crabbing "in all of its waters" as written in its crabbing regs, so it is a strange conflict of official info. Huh NJ bans crabbing only around the super-toxic Raritan Bay complex, so probably if you clean the DE crabs before cooking they are fine. That, plus the comm traps, lead one to think they must be good crabs.

Well, I am not really going out and trying to get crabs out of the delaware myself. I just thought it was pretty cool that they were there and very very abundant! I go out on the river with my bro and some friends during the week to do some fishing as it is to far to be running to the chesapeake every day.

But someone is definitely eating alot of crabs from the delaware river!!!! We have counted over 100 commercial pots out there and I have to tell the truth, we pulled a couple up just to have a look and then reset them. I think we may have checked about 2 or three each time out over the past 3 weeks and every time they are loaded like the deadliest catch on discovery channel. Tons or crabs andd all look pretty large! I wonder where they are being sold!!!!!!!!

Illswim.......to answer your question, when we go fishing we go over the other side in about 18 foot of water and the current seems to slow down some outside of the channel.  Or we have been on darby creek and the current is slower there as well. I'll tell you one thing though, the crabs have been eating alot more of our fishing bait than the fish! And for what it is worth we are catching tons of fish!
