justb21888 ........I said I am not out there crabbing. Just fishing but in 18 ft of water the crabs are on most of the bait instead of fish half the time. Chewing away down there!
But just to let everyone know....I have done better on the chesapeake this year on a few occasions in about 20ft as compared to my usual 8 to 9!!!

Well, there ya go.There`s crab in them there waters.I got the motor just need another boat to throw in the back of the truck.I knew when I saw them at Hoffman park there was more to this.

i use clams , blood worms. can catch big channel cats ,blue cats, bullhead cats. stripers, perch and carp.

More suprising news....i ate a couple of the crabs last night and I'm not dead yet! I don't even feel sick! To tell you the truth they tasted fantastic, go figure!

Here is the link to the NJ Government advisory. It does NOT say to NOT harvest crabs but it advises ZERO consumption of finfish for all people. It categorizes out sick and children but this is ALL people. So let's think about this. Perhaps NJ does not realize there are crabs this far north and failed to advise. But if you can't eat a Striped Bass that could have just come in from the ocean I surely would not eat a crab that sits in the chemical muck at the bottom. I was recently wakeboarding further north when my son, at the helm for the first time, ran amuck in about 12' of water. I used the wakeboard as a belly board and swam in to get the anchor and take it out to deeper water. I had to stir up the muck to move through the water. It was far from pleasant, stunk of chemicals and not my place to grocery shop. Again, this was above Phila. so just imagine what the chemical and fuel industry puts in the soup for the Chester stretch of the river. I was ABOVE the drinking water intake for the Phila. State St. facility!!!! which is below the sewer outlets for every town north such as Lambertville where you can stand beside the tanks and see the safe processed sewer water pouring back into the river. About 15 years ago I was making my annual sail from Riverside to Atlantic City and was passing a chemical plant on this stretch at night. Ok. hear is a Question? ? how do the shad get up to the Trenton area during the Shad run??? they have the Shad festival up there ever year and thousands of people come to it and EAT allot of Shad. ? |

I agree tattoo and have eatin these shad. They are just passin through, no harm no foul. These are clean fish. Those advisories are there just in case something happens, not b/c something will happen. Eat what you want and call it a day.

i have read several research projects from different rivers that advise no finfish eating but, it was ok to eat hard crabs since the digestive system between a fish and a crab is totally different. it also advised not to eat softshells since they are prone to infection in polluted water. myself personally i would eat crabs from the delaware river, i have had crabs from alot nastier places than that.jmho........rob

Nope. Haven't heard either way. I have seen plenty of commercial traps down by the Commodore Barry Bridge towards the end of summer though. Rumor has it that they do much better than you would think, and sell them to the local markets. Does that make it OK to eat em? I'll still pass. b/t/w, I've caught some myself out of there. If nothing else, you might get a contestant for the biggest crab contest That's no BS, they are really nice crabs in there towards the end of August. |

Crabs can, and do make it up, and even noth of philly. caught a 7" at alleghenny avenue back in the 90"s Mmmmmmm crabs and kielbasa.
