as Al Einstein told me while sucking on some beer in our neighborhood ratskeller

Motion is relative ---  to the user

whether it is a boat in the current or the current around the boat

motion is motion is motion is motion

Die Antwort  es

Ja, natürlich.

This is why they are called "Beautiful Swimmers"
Most good crab'n is on the moving tides.. They tend
to hitch a free ride and off they go... If your really
interested do a search for "Callinectes sapidus"

Get out there and get your crab-on!

If it's strong enough some gear may give you problems. For example trap doors don't always work right. Some times traps don't land right but some weight in the bottom can help. I'm sure others can add more to this but. That's a few things to think about...Charlie

Can there be to strong of a current to catch crabs

the problem is --- that it is an open ended question, just like -  Can there be too strong of a wind to catch crabs

the open ended answer is yes - can you catch crabs in a 150 MPH hurricaine wind or in a 50 MPH flood current

add to that the equipment used

so the best answer is "it depends"
sorry I couldn't give you a easy answer

I'm not sure how current affects crabs eating habits but I would think it hinders their ability to move around. I would think if they can make in your trap they'll stick around but its the getting there that might be the problem.

The current affects me when im trying to crab. When it does i try to find somewhere else to crab. I weight all my traps and if their moving its time to pick them up and find a new spot. It makes checking the traps and trotline very difficult. I lost 4 traps and a pot last week due to current and depth issues and i almost lost a few this weekend due to current.

Possibly not on the subject line exactly - but a very interesting read on crab activity.
