The popular Cape May County, New Jersey seafood restaurant where nine people were hurt Saturday night when a floor collapsed will not open again this year.

300 people were eating at the Crab House on Ocean Drive in Wildwood Crest when the main dining room floor gave way.

Lower Township Building Inspector Gary Playford says the floor appears to have been compromised by the ravages of time and waterfront conditions.

"The strands had rusted through either the salt air or the salt water.  If there's a pinhole that water can get in there and eat at that metal.  It's under such pressure that it pops -- and I believe that it just gave way after 35 years."

Playford says township officials and engineers will inspect other area structures of similar age and exposed to similar conditions for any warning signs of instability.

He says they’ll know soon whether the adjoining Two Mile Inn restaurant is safe to re-open.

When was the last time the place was inspected?  I used to call on merchants, including restaurants down the shore, and after being in some of them and talking with the owners, I wouldn't eat there...Many owners of  businesses that do most of their business during the summer wouldn't put any money into their place to maintain it.....things like maintenance eat into the profit....Wink
