Novice crabber. Will be staying at Carpenter Point. Bringing Pontoon boat with my 2 sons. Planned on riding across to mouth of Elk River. Any advice to a beginner? I planned on handlines, nets and star traps.

Big Daddy,

We were down the Elk on Sunday, you did allot better than I did. We only wound up with 1/2 bush. and a 6.5" incher was a "giant" on this trip. I usually don't crab up this way until much later. I might have been too far up the river. I wasn't as far as Triton Marine but I could see it. Tried outside near the radio tower before calling it quits. Bush River this weekend for me. Will report back with the outcome.

Way to Go,

I was out today testing the ELK and they are still about 2 to 3 weeks away.. Got about 1/2 bushel in 2 1/2 hrs with the biggest being 6 3/4's. Mixed bag with lights and heavy.. Heavier crabs were deeper. With all the little crabs around might be a sign of a good August and September. Neighbors were laughing comparing the Bushel of crabs from the Wye on Tuesday to the Half today of the ELK's.. Now they know why I crab the WYE river...

Yeah, keep everybody down there with you at the Wye because the upper bay will be the only thing that saves the crabbing industry this season.  I've been catching crab up here like never before this early.  There's plenty of grass and little crabs (sort of like the lower bay used to be)  Anyway, keep em down there!  More for me!

Personally, I hope people keep talking about how small the elk crabs are. I know different, and so do all the "regulars" on the Elk. Let them keep thinking the "Big Ones" are on the Wye. The rest of us who are "in the Know" will keep catching and eating those tasty 7 inch crabs I caught last weekend.
