Good going Fred

Going out Sandy Hook, NJ  to the ocean this sat.. 12 hr flounder and anything else fishing. Was thinking of the Elk the weekend after. Was going to try fishing and crabbing. Hopefully the crabbing will pick up by then. Any idea how the fishing is at the Elk?

Hey Joe!  Fishing the ELK is great if all you want to do is have some tight lines and bent rods.  You'll catch fish all day but only catfish and white perch.  Maybe an occaisional largemouth.  If you're bottom fishing for the catfish try some raw shrimp with the shell off.  it kills them every time.  Rig.....threeway swivel with a snelled number one hook and about 16 to 20 inches of 10 lb. test down to a 2 oz. bank or flat sinker.

Can anyone advise whether a 12' semi-V with a 9.9 is too small for the Elk? Thanks.

Hey Pinchy no problem as long as it's not blowing over 15mph. You can see the launch from where you crab,or run about a mile to the mouth or Bo. As far as fishing i saw some small blues and rock breaking water and one boat landed a legal rock! Nice place ranger even gave me a ride back to the ramp after he found me a place to park. There seems to always be a Bass Tourn. there but the Park Staff handles the parking very well FRED

What ramp do you guys use in this area? What are the costs associated with the ramp? Thanks in advance, John

Pinchy, Here is my thoughts if you decide to go out on the Elk with your 12' boat. If there is a chance of increasing winds during the day stay clear of the State Park. Water there can get really rough. I have had to come across from the Boh with up to 4' swells. I would use Triton Marina up in the Elk.

yeah and watch the wakes from the big boats that go by from time to time. I just about sunk my bass boat a few years back when i wasn't paying attention. He's right it can get pretty miserable down there if the wind kicks up.

Just21888, Did you get get in the middle of the Bass Tournament last weekend. I didn't know there was one scheduled. I got caught sitting in a long, did I say long line waiting for a ramp then it took a little skill not to bump into anyone as they floated in front of the ramps as I was trying to get to the Boh.

One thing I must admit, they seem to be having fun, good spirits.

The Elk and Boh are both busy rivers and can get a little rough. Last Saturday we also witnessed a Poker Run passing through

Thanks madcrabber1113, justb21888, JBCrabber, & Rock Run Crabber. I really appreciate the advice, you've convinced me to avoid making an expensive and possibly dangerous mistake. I believe I read a post stating that the Triton marina "went private" and now their launch is a big hassle (?) The better idea is to simply take the 9.9 motor down to Schnaitman's and hook it onto one of their $27.50 16' rowboats. It's cheaper and safer. I really don't care how many or few crabs we catch, as long as we remain IN the boat and enjoy the day. Good luck all.

Big Daddy where do you put in?  Bob a bouy and I are heading out thursday with our boys we are putting in at Elk Neck state park.  Is there any other free boat ramps down there.  That is the only one I know about.  Don't want to steal your spot, just trying to find my own honey hole.  Nice Crabs, hope we can do as well as you did.  Wink

There are no free ramps that I know of in Cecil County, including Elk Neck State Park.

The only free ramp that I've ever found in Cecil County was at Conowingo and, before reading some recent posts on the supporting members board  Grin , never saw too many crabs there.  Roll Eyes

Why don't any of you guys try out Stemmers Run?  It's right across the Elk from Elk Neck State Park.  It's great if you're coming from the north or the east ( PA or DE).  There is a drop box and mirror tags, 5 bucks to launch.  Gotta be at least 50 parking spots there if not 100.  If you already have the ramp sticker you don't even have to pay.  I use this ramp almost every weekend and have never had to wait or even seen the parking lot half full.  It's a very nice ramp too, my brother launches his 28' Baja there @ low tide with no problem.  You guys should check it out on the MD DNR site.
