 Huh
I thought the size limit was 5 1/4 for sport crabbers and 5 for commercial crabbers. But you could be right CBLU. That would make it fair for all the crabbers out there. Not that it matters to me since I haven't caught my first crab of the year yet. Sad  It wont be that much longer though until I start using my ruler.  Grin

indoe,
No I'm pretty sure that's correct. Everybody can catch 5" crabs until 7/15. Now the odd thing is that Md has split the recreational rules between "Chesapeake Bay & Tributaries" and "Ocean & Coastal Bays". According to the "Ocean & Coastal Bay" regs. it's a straight 5" the entire year. I haven't made it out yet, but I'm going to play it safe. If it's under 5 1/4" it goes back.  I'd rather they just left it at 5 1/4" the entire year, that's a real nice crab with one more shed.

After talking with some MDNR folks and getting schooled on the rules, I believe Recreational Crabbers have to be 5.25" while Commercial Crabbers can keep them at 5" until July when they go up to 5.25".  Also, recreational crabbers can have 4 or 5 undersized and still be legal (won't get a fine).

So I was right, and as a recreational crabber my crabs have to be 5 1/4 inches. But I can posses up to 4 or 5 crabs that are under sized. I didn't know that.  Shocked I'm just confused now and I'll be safe and only keep crabs over 5 1/4 long.

Well I just went to the Maryland DNR website and it says that the size limit is 5" until July 15 when it increases to 5 1/4"

I still think it's 5" also until the 15th. This is straight from the DNR website:

Summary of 2003 Recreational Crab Regulations

Minimum Size (No minimum size for mature females):                               APRIL 1 - JULY 14           JULY 15 - DECEMBER 15
5 " Male Hard                 5 1/4" Male Hard
3 1/4" Peeler                  3 1/2" Peeler

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/crab/2003recreationalcrabsummary.html

I guess you have to interpret that for yourselves. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but it seems pretty clear to me.
