The 1st mate (11,) and I went out Sunday morning, left the dock at 6am...
1st mate #2 was not feeling well, so we left her to sleep in with Mommy...

We hit my usual fishing hole for some bait, spot & perch. picked up about a 1/2 doz of each, incoming tide about an hour to the top, drifted up the ELK towards the Boh along the channel.. nothing. as we drifted by Cabin Johns, at least 3 or 4 guys crabbing already, well before the new start time.
Explained to my son the new regs again as he questoined me about them...  they probably are not aware of them yet or just don't care.

At about 7:30 we ran back down south past Elk Neck Marina and at least 4 more guys crabbing before the time, We watched a great sunrise coming down the Elk...sorry no pics this week, left the camera in the truck......:nono:

Sat there watching the clock, at 07:42 ( I figured this to be a 1/2 hour after sunrise)we dropped our first trap,
we have 19 topless, lost one last weekend when someone came over to say hi...
Chicken Necks, Tide was just turning to go out....6-9' of water.
Pulled 114 times, 6 runs... we were going out for 25 crabs to eat during the race.

1st run 14 crabs.....all keepers, one with 2 nice sized males, we started off 9 for 9, that was cool....next 5 runs were 5 to 8 per run....
We finished up with 45 keepers, he wanted to keep going.
Saw more just legal crabs then I have seen in weeks, we keep nothing under 6,we threw back at least 20, less females then weeks past as well, was about 90% males this morning.

The people that stopped by last weekend to check on the area (and cut a trap by accident, thus the 19 traps)were back out there and we stopped by to say hi to them and let them know about the new regs as they had mentioned they were there since before sunrise.
I experimented a little bit at the end, on the next to the last I pulled 2 traps and ran them into 2-3' and picked up 2 nice males in the shallows also.....

We were done at back at the dock by 09:15, eating crab for breakfast again 10:30, we couldn't wait for the race:D
They were just as good later in the day also, left them in my igloo wrapped in tinfoil hot off the steamer and they were still warm 4 hours later. Not hot but just right.

It was a first for the boat today, as I let Jr launch, drive the whole time as well as bring her back in, I was waiting for him to say something, as soon as we got back to the dock, he thanked me for letting him skipper the whole time, that was cool! He made Daddy proud!

No stuffed Rockfish again this week, we'll try again next week......

Great time again...

Do you actually catch crabs when its dark? I remember going to the community pier when i was young and would get there just before sunrise and put my lines overboard  but you wouldnt catch a crab until the sun peaked up a little. So what purpose does this law serve to not have your gear overboard till after sunrise?
