BALTIMORE (Map, News) - The omnibus spending bill recently signed into law by President Bush eliminates funding for a research project in Baltimore intended to increase the blue crab population in the Chesapeake Bay.

The Center of Marine Biotechnology at the Inner Harbor received nearly $4 million from Washington for the project last year, but that appropriation was cut to zero for the current year.

"We were all surprised that such a program that delivered so much on the investment was cut," said Yonathan Zohar, the center's director and the crab project's leader. "There is no other way to conduct this type of program other than to get this type of federal funding. ... And for the blue crab, it was so well- deserved because we wanted to do something before it was too late."

Zohar told The (Baltimore) Sun he has enough money to continue the research until the end of this year and will seek other funding. If he is unsuccessful, Zohar said he would have to lay people off.

The salaries of about two dozen scientists are paid through the federal grant, as well as researchers in Virginia, North Carolina and Mississippi. Most of the grant money is shared between Zohar's lab in Baltimore and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, in Edgewater.

The researchers have been looking at the life cycle of the blue crab and observing how young crabs migrate in the bay.

Last year, the center put 215,000 crabs in the Chesapeake Bay, although that was a fraction of what would be needed to make a difference in breeding stocks, between 6 million to 16 million crabs, Zohar said.

The project began with a $300,000 grant from Phillips Foods and several hundred thousand dollars in state funding.

"The program must continue, one way or the other," Zohar said. "The Chesapeake Bay needs it."

I'm sure Mr Zohar needs it too....I'm pretty sure he loved have all that funding too....All our Coastal States PIZZ money away,like it's going out of style... And I don't know 1 thing these guys have done to help the  Bays or Sounds....They do studies for hundreds of thousands of dollars, to line their pockets, and give enough info just to get another grant... It's a never ending rape of the system, and we all pay for it......How long has the Bay Clean-up effort been going on????What results have been reached???Mr Zohar makes alot  of money off these grants, and he's not alone, It's "educated welfare" at the expense of the tax payers.... It's time we hold these studies accountable.....(CAN YOU SAY PORK BARREL SPENDING)

I am with ya Gene, if it's not there it's here and other states as well. I think it's time to see "real" results. IMHO after all these studies and tests, by now someone has to have the secret to crabs. Actually, not a secret, but info on how to properly manage the blue crab population so it cost effective for everyone who uses the water.(that might not be worded right, but you get the idea) Personally, I am sick of these guys getting grants for a crab study, fish study. Put more energy towards stopping polution, over taxation etc,etc. Speaking of that Gene, did you see and feel the pinch when NC raised the fuel tax again? I [dang] sure hope I see some better roads in my neck of the woods, or maybe I will send the state my front end alignment bill.

I'd like to be optimistic and think that something positive is happening, but the common sense part of me makes me wonder when the results are expensive or hard to see.

Not that it is relevant...but it's $18 a crab....still SUPER expensive.....it better come with 2 dozen brothers and sisters at that price!

Nevermind the math error, geez, that comes to $1,080.00 for a bushel, heck I would like to sell just  5 a week and be happy. Hey Mr Zohar, we have plenty of crabs......want some. BTW, the $18.00 crab better be about 20" from point to point and come steamed....with a six pack.

I got a way to make Bush change his mind. I'm gonna bring a bushel of mumbos to the White House and steam them right up on the lawn. When the Prez gets a whiff of that seasoning floating across the Capitol, he'll be under my control. I'll then sit him down in front of about 8 or 9 mudders. I'll wait till he's done, with a face full of mustard, shell pieces all over his tie, Old Bay stains half way up to his elbows. He's SURE to see the value of the blue crab. Then I'll say, "Mr. President, why waste everybody's time chasing some douchebag named Bin Laden around? Bring the boys home and let them chase blue crabs. Here George, have another Natty Boh". If more people thought in terms of crabs and beer, the world would be a tastier place.

Good luck with that idea, he's cutting everything for the "War Machine". But, who knows......maybe he could get a good taste and at least make July "CRAB FEST MONTH" and make Friday thru Sun mandatory crabbing days, another words Blue Flu days

the rivers,and tributaries and bring back the grasses necesary to substain live for crabs,fish,oysters and all marine life.

I guess i'am dreaming,but i still have hope in mankind to fine a way

I  feel your pain but you are dreaming unfortunately  The way to do that is too live like the Indians lived 300 years ago.We are never going to stop building stuff,driving cars,flying,making trash,fertilizing farms and yards and thousands of other modern day pollution causing convenience induced items that kill the water quality  We are way too spoiled to give up our pollution causing activities.

1st thing... lets start enforcing the laws that are on the book's...  When someone with money can skirt around the laws we all loose.. I read a report this week about pollution down here.  The report says that everything is OK.  The chicken [curd] is composted as the law requires... BS..  It is taken right out of the chicken house and spread on the fields...  Nothing is going to change
