New to crabbing-any tips or suggestions?
«

Hello,
I am new to crabbing and figured that this was the best place to go for information. I am from Ocean County NJ and am looking for free crabbing locations. Also, when is the best time of day to crab? When does the crabbing season begin in NJ? Any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to tell me basic information that most people already know, as I am practically brand new!
Thanks!

WELCOME TO THE SITE
I personally don't know enough about NJ to say when and where about crabs. Down here (NC) crabbing usually gets good when the water is above 50 and really picks up when it hits 60+. If using traps, chicken necks work good as well with bunker. Trotline would be a definite necks or bull lips. Crab pots (like comms use) I would use bunker or bluefish etc and /or shrimo heads.....shrimp heads when the water is cooler. (They last longer then) you can use heads in a trap as well, but use a clam bag to hold them in. Good Luck this year

Crabbing in NJ, for me starts in June. I haven't crabbed any earlier than that. If you are bent on finding free locations, there are many in NJ. Browse some of the history in this website from last year. I've discovered a lot of great locations by exploring the creeks of southern NJ. They don't require a boat, and are free (except for bait/traps).
A lot of great crabbing is accessible from reasonably priced boats, like in the upper Navesink (Red Bank area). Dividing Creek in south Jersey has reasonably priced boats as well.

Ocean County? You can use baskets or collapsable box or star traps at the head of Dock Road off after turning east off of Route 9 in West Creek. It is one of the best crabbing spots from land in the area. You will see the spot clearly, as other recreational crabbers will be lining the waterline once things heat up.
