I've been thinking about trying to cut back bait expense since gas is so high and was wondering if anyone knows anything about catching eels, where I could get some inexpensive eel pots and what to use to bait them.  Any info would help a lot. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with them but I did see that Captain Bruce has them.  Check out http://www.stackablecrabtraps.com/

I'm sure that he could answer any questions that you have.

I thought eels were illegal to use for rockfish bait in MD. They do, however, make excellent and legal crab bait as well as sushi unagi chinese There's a lot of info on this topic in the "Eeling & Fishing" section below. Cheesy

Thanks for the replies.  Now i just have to decide if the investment is worth it.  Right now i spend 14$ for 40 lbs of necks which last about 2 weeks.

Can anyone estimate what the catch rate would be like for eels per trap in the patuxent river?

I know this thread is old but was wondering if PATUXENTPAT ever decided to catch his own bait and how it worked out for him.

horseshoe crab is the best bait for eels especially egged up females. Big quahogs work o.k. too
