I don't see a topic on these yet, but admittedly I haven't read thru all the Forum posts yet either. The NJ Dept. of Fish and Wildlife has a great full page article on these new invaders in this month's issue if any of you can get a copy.
5 mittens were caught in the Hudson River last year (that were REPORTED). 19 reports in all last year I believe, 15 males and 4 females.
Have any of our members had sightings or heard reports yet?

They are also known as Hairy Crab and are a favorite item in some Asian cuisines.

iv got one gave it to dnr.aisain miton crab.they are traped in the balast tanks on big tanker ships.wene they come in the bay and off load.the tanks are pumped out in to the bay.they have this boi mass on their claws and feet.it looks like the hair that grows on comm pots.their legs are long too.we got snakeheads in some ponds neer my house as well.dnr did a fish kill in a pond behind dunkin donuts on rt 3 .but they didnt get the 3 other ponds up streem.wen i was 16 my freind had 2 a male and a female.they would launch out of the tank and bang the lid .the noise was scaring his mom.crash crash crash.so she made him get ride of them.i whatched him through them into the lake on the golf course.that was 1986.two years ago i was fishing their.spot fishing thes two bass and they were staring at the same thing.and thats wene i saw it.a big one.big one...the scales were big as a 25 cent peices.so i learned how to shoot a bow.to bow fish him .but never got a nother shot.my baby gurl [zoe]and i fish their once a week still looking.it wasnt a carp.i shoot them.these 2 bass were scared of this thing both behind him and staring at him.he had to be.3ft or more i used to work in a pet store.no mistake in what i saw.they are live bering fish 1000s at a time.not many bass in that lake today.not many baby ducks.like 2 3 per mama usaly8 to 10.they r their dnr dont care i told them their response [that dosnt suprize me]well that suprized me that they didnt care.thats thats

i think my neibor saw one he said it was a messed up spider crab he showed it to me i had no idea wat it was tht was a few years ago though

Happy "Spring" everyone!!! I was talking to a fellow from the DEC the other day concerning possible new striped bass regulations in the Hudson and Marine district. The talk turned to crabbing in the Hudson. The reports he received last year all backed up what I myself was saying; that the crabs seemed to be larger but there was a sharp decline in numbers. He had no explanation for this. I mentioned that I had not seen any mitten crabs, so I doubted predation was a factor. I was shocked when he told me that he was out with a dredger from Raritan Bay to check data at the end of March and they pulled up a female mitten crab bearing eggs from lower NY Harbor. It'll be interesting to see what this season brings.

In China they are considered a delicacy. People will pay upwards of $10 usd per 500 grams.

It would be very interesting to catch one in the Hudson, i'm actually hoping to just so i can see one up close. but i dont think i would bother trying to cook one of them up lol.

 What Ronster said. They are an invasive species with no natural predators here and could displace our own blue crabs. I'd rather not see that happen!

Just put the word out that they're extremely delicious and command prices upwards of $50 for a tiny box (like 5-7 of them) in China and they'll disappear fairly quickly imho. If you happen to catch one, definitely eat it! They're amazing.

They are delicious. Doesn't mean 1) it shouldn't be reported and 2) turned in when caught. It's the responsible thing to do.
