Beware of any of you guys heading down to Lake Mattamuskeet this weekend. A large fire, that has consumed over 22,500 acres as of 12 noon today is sending dense plumes of smoke in that direction.  Keep your eyes and ears open for newer reports before going there. I am not saying it is closed, actually I will find out here shortly.

It is open, at least at the Mattamuskeet lodge and the refuge areas, for today at 3pm anyway. The guy in the office said call before going on the weekend as the winds have changed and now getting ashes there, so things could go bad he said.

yeah it was blowing smoke and ash all the way to OBX.. KDH and Nags Head... it looked like snow falling with all the ash... I thought some redneck was burning his trash and was going to call Horse Fly and tell him to put it out til I saw the forest fire on the news.  Went out in the ocean friday for cobia and the smoke was hanging on the beach thick ... could see past a mile...

Hey HorseFly, Get your darn smoke out of my air space..  Angry  Wink Unbelieveable, looks like fog here but it is smoke from the fire.  WX has got small craft warnings up for the Lower bay because of limited visability, less than one mile.  Sad  We woke up to "I smell smoke!"

Jack,

yeah I thought some redneck was burning trash when I was down there first weeek of june.  had ash falling into the pool at the rental house.  that was tuesday 6/3/08.  then the it blew 35 mph and cloudy from south no smoke.  thursday blew east so it kept it off th ebeach.  by friday morning it was a SW wind right fromt the fire to Nags head... stuck like burnt pine cones burnt framing timber smell like 2 x 4's.
smoke so bad friday 6//6/08  could see a nautical mile on the ocean while we were fishing for cobia...
it was like your pic... a smokey fog/haze that burnt your eyes, nose and throat.....  made sight casting difficult.  I hear that this past week it got even worse... Can't imagine living close to it as that must be putrede....

Gene, get the rain dancing shoes back out..  Another smoke warning for VA today.  Hard to believe a swamp can burn that long.  Live video of fire -> http://www.hamptonroads.tv/adv_search_embed.cfm?e=140177&keyword=&section=&source=
