1oz sinkers for trap floats
«
on:
July 09, 2008, 03:00:44 PM »
Does anyone have or can they recommend a place where I can get 1oz sinkers for cheap? I am making trap floats (like the kind Bottom Feeder, Tattoo, CrabDog have. ( sorry if I missed anyone, did I miss anyone? ) Like Tattoo's floats, I want to put a 1oz weight in one end of the pvc so the float stands upright. On Ebay, they cost around .10/piece but others have confirmed that's a little high. .04 - .05/ea is more reasonable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....

Shack,
I just checked both cabela's and Bass Pro online for egg and bank sinkers and they are runinng $5-$8 for anywhere from 10 - 32 in quantity plus shipping. Sounds like the price you found is not bad. Keep in mind if you ordered them don't forget to add in shipping. Go to your nearest fishing/tackle store. Look for 1 oz bank or egg sinkers they should fit inside the pvc and slide to on end when the trap is placed in the water. You would better to buy them locally vs orderign form bass pro shop or cable's cause shipping will cost more than the sinkers. SOme local places you coudl get this might include Dick's Sporting goods, Sports Authority, etc. Sound liske the prices you quoted are cheap. Good luck. Man thing thouhgh is I would take one of the PVC pipes with you to makes they will fight inside prior too buying or ordering. I don't use em, if my float tips up then I know the line is set too short. To each their own.

No, the difference in price, monetarily doesn't matter to me. What does irk me is when I buy something and then find out it's available someplace else for less.....
Of course now with gas at the current price, I no longer will do road trips between stores....just use the cell phone more. I don't want to date myself, but I can remember when "parts" was a bigger % of a bill than "labor"
I also remember an old friend of mine telling me a story of how he once "snuck" a coffee can full of lead from work to make his own sinkers.....someone gave him a mold so they cost him nothing....

I don't think your going to find lead for .4-.5 an oz. .10 an oz is a great deal today. The price of metals has gone through the roof. In my town a couple of summer houses got looted for all the copper pipes etc and it ruined the houses. Trashed the walls tore everything out.

Not sure if it can be done in today's world but back in the day, tire shops would let you have as many old tire weights as you wanted. Very easy to melt down and make your own sinkers.
Just a thought, I'd ask around at different shops and see if they will still give them away.
