Barely legal females

I knew you'd look.
Going crabbing somewhere Thursday, so I stopped in a local H-Mart to pick up the chicken legs (cheap) and mackerel pike (also cheap) and saw a plastic container full of blue claws. Never knew they had them. Every [dang] one female and many looked on the edge of death. And to think many of us go through the trouble of releasing the females. A good deal of those crabs were barely legal. A question, at that size, how many do you think have spawned at all?

There has to be some has been some discussion about this and some argue that it doesn't matter with taking the females. I even read one post last year where the guy said taking them had no affect on the population. We just do this for a meal and recreation. The comms got to make a living at it. If they want to preserve that living, why do they persist in cutting off the source? I saw a few out on the Shrewsbury a few weeks ago and they were nice enough, chatted with us a bit while tending traps. Told us good luck. In that area we only picked up a few females in half an hour so we left. Maybe that's where all of the she crabs came from as they had a bunch of traps nearby (half mile west of Goose Neck Point Bridge). Oh well MassCrabbin, nobody seems to care. I saw a post before where the person asked about the sponge. Should you be crabbing if you don't know the law or the reason behind it?

AGREE.
Tattoowhy agree with him/them.....it solely not the comms fault the crabs have disapeared....it comes from all of us. Run off, pollution, overbuilding along fragile water ways and so on. It is virtually impossible to "catch" all of them. BTW, I don't mean to bust ur chops, but the guy doesn't have grasp on the blue crab fishery...neither do I

This has something to do with where you are from? Wiped out the crabs in NH? Obviously, you people are not the ones to ask about the blue claw as you have no idea of it's habits or range. As usual, you cover your ignorance with profanity (if you could) and threats. The issue was about taking females, especially the smaller ones, "barely legal". You'll notice I was somewhat concerned with how the commercials will continue to make a living. They seem to be crying the blues about the blues in some areas south of here, but, and that's with one t you ignorant redneck, they want to blame everybody and everything but themselves. None of you had anything to do with overharvesting. It's all pollution and Yankees spittin' in the Potomac. Yep, das what kill'd off our living. Well, pollution is certainly responsible, Yankees are to blame for many things. But taking every female you can, naw, nuttin' ta do wid it!
Go ahead you ignorant rednecks, take your best shot. Maybe I'll post a picture of my Great Great Grandfather, Cpl. James Llewellyn Jones of Hamilton, New York, standing off to the side of that courthouse in Appomattox VA, on that fine day in 1865 when we showed you who was boss!

genecrab...youre an immature idiot, but hey, why state the obvious? Your response says it all.
I never claimed to know EVERYTHING about anything, so your silly accusation is just that. Youre apparently offended because youre one of the commerc's that DOES take females? Or are you really just that unhappy about life that you get all peeved at a post?
lol

and PS...I have never been crabbing up here, obviously. My husband is from Jersey, and has been crabbing since he was old enough to walk.
Didn't mean to get everyone's knickers in a twist for stating an opinion, I never said ALL comm's were bad, evil, poaching SOB's that trash the planet. But yes, I firmly believe that when large amounts of "barely legal females" are taken, it depletes the population. Common sense (which ISNT so common afterall!)
Also, anyone that knows anything about us Massholes is that we hate the Yankees...by all means...keep calling me redneck! haha...

What exactly is a "barely legal" female?
In MD, a legal female is one of any size that is matured. The law says it's legal for commercial watermen to harvest females that are matured. Does it make someone bad because they take them when it is "legal"? For some commercial watermen, due to the location, this is the bulk of the catch.
Have you ever eaten any form of picked crabmeat out in public (restaurant) or ever bought a can of crabmeat from a retailer? Sorry to say, but 99% of the time, it's female meat. Just keep that in mind when you order your next crabcake, or stuffed flounder, or crab imperial.
Bottom line, as long as it's legal and the law is followed, no one should be chastised or crucified for the harvest of them.

Common sense says that any crab taken depletes the population, don't know how y'all do it up there
but here in the south it takes one from each gender to reproduce,I have noticed that the local lesbian population does seem to have problems having children so I can only assume it is the same way with the blue crabs. No dang wonder all those little yankee girls come south for a good time and to get trained in the art of love making.

It would've been better to have done just a little research before revealing your ignorance. (BTW - the word "ignorance" isn't intended as an insult, it just means you have no knowledge of your subject!)
From:
http://www.bluecrab.info/spawning.html
"The average sponge contains about
two million eggs
, but may contain anywhere from
750,000 to 8 million eggs
, depending on the size of the crab...On the average, only one out of every million eggs survives to become a mature adult. Mortality of eggs has been attributed to fungal infection, predation, suffocation in stagnant water, and exposure to extreme temperatures...Although a female will mate only once,
she will produce many fertilized egg masses during her lifetime from this single mating
. Studies in Florida found that some female crabs produce as many as
seven broods (sponges) in one year from a single mating, and up to 18 broods over 2-2½ years.
"
What all of this means is, roughly, that
the fecundity of the blue crab is so high that the harvesting of females is not the
limiting factor
on the population
(at least in NJ). Case closed.
