The cubes in the bag . don't open the bag . you don't want water in the bottom , the crabs will dround. or if you open the ice make sure the drain hole is open.

I use frozen ice... no seriously. i leave the crabs in the basket. crack the window on my cap to help keep it a littel cooler on there. I cover the basket with a saokiing wet towel.. I then place two 8 lb bags of ice on top of the bushel lid... I poke holes in the bag so te as the ice melts it drips on the crabs and keeps them wet... it will drain out the basket bottom so they won't drown...I know it sounds crazy.. but they will die in ice water. Anyway I drive home 2-3 hours form the eastern shore to the PA line and they hold and I lose little to no crabs... Two things.... keep them out of the sun.. cool and wet....Mine are inseide my truck bed but I have a cap on top so the sun stays off of em... ....cdog

I freeze water in gatorade bottles, and use it in my drinks cooler through the day, then just put them in the bushel basket for the ride home, keeps water off the bottom, and stays plent cool for the crabs.

I JUS GOTTEN TEH CRABS TODAY AND 20 have alrdy died ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh What kind of setup do you have? You said your father runs a supermarket and you're selling the crabs there. So, how are you keeping the crabs after you buy them? When you get the crabs from your salesman, how is he transporting them to you? Does he have a refrigerated truck, an open pick-up truck, is he a wholesaler or just a crabber selling his own catch? Are the crabs in bushel baskets, crates, cardboard boxes? Did you ask him when and where the crabs were caught? If we knew the answers to all of these questions we could probably offer better suggestions. If you have a supermarket with refrigeration systems, you're probably going in the wrong direction worrying about putting your crabs on ice to keep them. Most of the guys using ice don't have a walk-in or other refrigeration or are just trying to get the crabs home on a long drive without them dying. Also, 20 dead out of how many total?

I use a plastic laundry basket. Has holes all around it. I drilled a bunch through the bottom and bungeed a plastic lid on top. Keeps them shady and gives real good circulation. I just dunk the whole basket in the water now and again. They keep just fine the whole trip and back to North Jersey.

Looks like the clam question went away. So if I use an old clothes basket for crabs, will my crabs taste like dirty laundry if the ice melts
