The law states that you must have a Non Commercial Crab Pot License for any non collapsable trap that is left unattended in the water.  The $2 License give you the ability to leave 2 Pots unattended.  I believe what the person was telling you was for attended pots(ie: you go crabbing and decide to toss the pot in the water while you are there crabbing).  That law states that not more than 2 crab pots can be used.  The law on crab pots also requires a buoy marked with your license #, non floating line, a biodegradeable panel or equivalent door opening and turtle excluder in pots left in certain areas.  Your best bet is to go to the NJ Website state.nj.us/dep/fgw/njregs.htm#marine and click on the marine and crabbing regulations and read them for yourself.  You certainly don't want to be in violation or get your pot confiscated and returned or picked up with a ticket attached!!

Good Luck!

Good to know.    I can't wait to hear about how long the pot was in the water and where you set it when you post your report on the NJ Crabbing Reports forum.
